93 Points

Saturday, January 19, 2013 - Traveled east to visit family (Inauguration) and found this bottle in a retail store 24 hours after sampling first bottle of La Grand Rue, a 1999, 24 hours ago. Brought to family dinner where popped and poured. Dark ruby. Reticent nose which opened up after an hour to reveal pungent florals, pine forest, cinnamon, red and black berry. Bright, fresh, smoothly-textured layers of red raspberry fruit infused with tightly-grained iron and mineral notes on the palate, along with minimal oak influence which did not detract. Very nice acidity and muscular but not outlandish tannins. Moderately-long finish of polished red fruit and iron. Similar to the '99 in its beautiful assemblage of elegance, power, and evolution in the glass, but a touch behind in regard to detail and complexity. Very young of course. I'd be happy to sample this again in 8 to 10 years.
