90 Points

Saturday, January 17, 2009 - Lots of powerful dark fruit and cherry syrup along with smoke, meat, crushed flowers, and tar, a combination that is wonderful on the nose and merely good on the palate. There is so much fruit in every sip I wonder if I might not like this even more if it were not dailed to 11, as this is borderline hot in places. Thankfully not excessively sweet, yet still built for size, and the tannins are getting more noticeable over time. I liked my first glass better, and that came after an hour decant. Update from day 2 (stuffy nose)... and 3 (less stuffy): the tannins have receded a bit but the flavors are still compacted with a stewed plum component some will like/tolerate better than others. Hard to score -- on day one I wrote 88-91 and since then more like 89 with some upside potential. I'm not sure that the Carlisle Syrahs will end up being a good match for me in terms of style, but I've only had 2 very young examples.
