Tuesday, November 10, 2015 - Tasted blind. Clearly aged, mature, slightly maroon red color with faint purple highlights; surprisingly opaque color. Mature, meaty nose with slightly rustic and even stinky hints; dried blackcurrant, leather and animal on the fore with tobacco, sous-bois, some floral perfume and a hint of graphite in the background. Overall very complex and elegant appearance with a hint of arrogance and attitude. Generous in the mouth; the palate is definitely mature, but still holds on to youthful characteristics. Complex, layered taste with flavors of dried blackcurrants and prunes, some leather, notes of dried dark fruits and hints of clove spice and cedar. Tannins are still quite tough, but the mouthfeel is silky smooth. Acidity is still going strong, giving the wine nice, lively lift. Hints of dark, ripe cherry sweetness in the tip of the tongue. Long, ample and mature yet dry and structured finish with pronounced acidity, dark and withered fruits, raisined dark grapes and berries, some figs and faint aromatic florality.

A fantastic experience showcasing what a mature Bordeaux really can be. The wine still has both structure and energy and the aromatic depth and complexity is perplexing. However, given its age, the wine is definitely very mature - I've had more youthful Bordeaux that have been only a couple of years older and I've had Barolos as mature as this, but from the early 1970's and late 1960's. Thus, I'd say that the wine has reached its peak some while ago, and while it still might stay there for quite a while, it probably won't evolve much further. As this was served blind, I guessed this was Bordeaux, but given my previous experiences, I guessed initially this would have been much older - so in a sense, this is in a surprisingly mature phase already. Drink up now, I'd say.
