Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - Hmm, this was a classy wine that hinted at greatness but never really opened up and delivered. Initial notes were a little disjoint yet promising with floral notes, lead pencil, cedar, and mineral. This came together well to show a compact, focused yet elegant bouquet. The palate never really delivered though, starting out a bit choppy and astringent and then opening somewhat narrowly into a beautiful yet somewhat middle weight claret that lacked the concentration and depth one would expect of a first growth. This was sort of a Junior Margaux, and I was hoping for a bit more. Oh well, it's still always nice to have a chance at an older bottle like this.
