Thursday, January 7, 2016 - Bought at auction so can be sure of the provenance; drank before and during a prime rib dinner the day after Christmas; drank at the same time as a bottle of '95 Margaux.
Tasted at opening, 30, 60 and 120 mins after decanting; it improved a fair amount after 30-60 mins, but wasn't much better at 2 hours.
The '85 was smoother than the '95, don't know if that's an aging or vintage issue.
There was some bricking in the dusky plum color; Notes of plum, currant; tannins were quite subdued.
I am still moving toward the conclusion that the emperor has no clothes: ie, that the cost of these vintage first growth bordeauxs can't be justified by their quality
