2009 Lillian Winery Syrah

Community Tasting Note

90 Points

Tuesday, September 11, 2018 - Decanted 1 hour, I am not surprised that this was bested by a Carlisle Sonoma Coast syrah at my last high/low blind tasting. This was enjoyable as a full throttle modern syrah. Great fruit and rich full-bodied modern appeal, although not very sophisticated. I would like to know if it is a mistake to drink these down, because I see nothing but negatives for this wine going forward, and I wish I hadn't bought so many, even at a reduced price.

I quite buying several years a go and am just waiting for the fruit to fade, then drink away the error of my ways.

9/12/2018 10:45:00 AM - I like to think that I can tell the difference qualitatively between big modern wines, even if they are not my favorites. And to me, so far, 2007 to 2009 Lillian Syrah was better on release than it is now. So my question is whether this is in a dull spot and will re-emerge in a better place or not.

10/18/2018 1:01:00 PM - I'm going to guess that this wine needs a much longer decant time? I'm thinking 3-4 hours. I haven't tried any of mine yet and have just been waiting but that is just my guess.

10/30/2018 12:47:00 PM - I just drank a bottle recently and decanted it 3.5 hours. The air cant really hurt this wine because it is so big and burly It is very good but in a really thick, extracted and Big and Bold style. I thought it was good but clearly not in the same league as say Araujo Eisele Syrah or Alban Reva Syrah. It doesn't have the layers of flavors I like. In it's defense it is much cheaper than Araujo or Alban but I'd rather pay a little more and drink those. IMO.
