12/12/2013 10:30:00 AM - Hey! I was the one who brought the 2008 Elk Cove 'La Boheme' PN to that offline. I'm glad you have been liking Elk Cove wines, I used to be a big fan of their wines and still have quite a few in my collection. It was the very first wine club however I am not a member there any longer, however I have been re-considering joining their club as I think the 2012 vintage will play into the wine maker's style very well. First the good: I think in years with good ripeness of fruit or warmer years, Elk Cove wines are really great. They do let the alcohol levels get a bit high, (2006 saw 15% across the board, 2009 produced a lot of 14.5% pinots) but they tend to make a larger, more forward style and when they are good, they are really, really good. (like that bottle of 2008 La Boheme I brought to the event) I think you get a good value being a wine club member, free tastings no matter the group size, a huge horizontal of OPN every year, and it's a great place to visit that isnt too far from Portland. Also they make great Riesling, good bubbles and a decent dessert wine. The not so good: I think the winemaker struggles a bit in colder years, 2007 and 2010 really showcased this. In 2007 some of the wines were nearly undrinkable on release. However, over time these wines relaxed and about 3 years down the road, were drinking wonderfully. It's primarily why I have so many 2010's still that I haven't touched. The 2010's were easier on release than the 2007's but show similarities that made me think I would probably benefit from holding onto them a couple/few years before drinking. So, as I was getting the last of the 2010's and seeing that 2011 was even colder, I decided to end my membership there. With the 2012's hitting the market, I might rejoin, as I think their wines are going to be kick ass if they didn't let the ABV% get to high. I need to go taste there sometime very soon. As for availability in the city, I don't know where exactly you would get them. I know only a few single vineyards are sold to distributors with some of the bottlings being only a barrel or two, so only enough for wine club members. Like I said, I think their wine club (2 bottles every 2 months, $65 a shipment, can vary, sometimes two PNs, sometimes a rose and PN, but never worth less than $65) is a decent value if you are interested in getting a large variety every year.
