89 Points

Saturday, October 15, 2011 - Impromptu Saturday Japanese (Valley Point): Not a great Lalande. It certainly was a well-made wine which drank decently well, but I found it one of the weaker vintages in recent memory. Surprisingly merlot driven on the nose, it showed plenty of sweet plummy aromas and cherry notes, almost a bit candied at points, before more classic Lalande scents of earth, tobacco, spice with a bit of cassis peeked around the edges of the bouquet. The palate was a bit thicker and plusher than normal, plums again, and then some dark cassis sprinkled with notes of spice and earth - rather right-bank once more. There was just a twist of more left-bankish roasted capsicum and tobacco leaf somewhere in there, otherwise I might have thought it was a modern St Emilion. Not bad, but not great either. Time should add a bit of complexity, but this was a bit simple at the moment.
