Zoom blind tasting #4: Bordeaux (At home during circuit breaker): I did not like this early-on, when I tasted a few years after release. I must say it has improved over the years, but it still remains a rather underwhelming Lalande. It was by some distance the youngest tasting wine of the afternoon, and came across as a nicely plush, well-constructed Bordeaux, but with a rather adolescent awkwardness in the way it fell together. The nose was quite classic left-bank, with notes of cassis and dark berries, fresh cedar and some spice, and then just a curl of tea leaf, all this still tinged with a hint of new oak. On reflection, quite a typical for Lalande bouquet - something I did not pick-up when blind because of that overtly creamy new oak character. The palate seemed really young, and a touch tight, but there was a nice enough shape and slow to it, with plush tannins and nicely-integrated acidity framing smooth notes of cassis and dark berries, along with some of the green, leafy tones (again characteristic of Pichon-Lalande), and then a touch of sweet spice on the finish. There was a polished, rather creamy feel to this that made it seem quite modern, and a certain stubbornness in the material which detracted a bit from the character of the wine. This was certainly quite well-made though. I would lay it aside for 6-8 years to see where it goes.

2007 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was complex, perfumed and elegant. It could be an enjoyable and balanced wine, if the taster does not mind the obvious lack of structure and intensity. The maturing Pauillac was clear and medium ruby in colour with a deep garnet rim and traces of sediments. On the nose, leather, anise, dried blackberries and blackcurrants were up front, and with an hour in bottle, complexities of tobacco, earthy farmyard and violets developed. The mouthfeel was dry, medium-bodied, with medium-high level of acidity and medium level of supple tannin. Faint flavours of dried black fruits, iron-like minerality and Ceylon tea lingered in an elegant yet persistent finish. The blend consisted of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by cool and damp summer, and grapes struggled to ripen, if not being affected by mildew. My wine friend was disappointed by the lack of intensity on the palate. Taking into account of the vintage characters, however, it was among the best 2007 Bordeaux wines I had tasted. There were examples with drying tannin, overwhelming oak and pungent herbaceousness, while 2007 Pichon Lalande was elegant and balanced.

Beautiful mature Pauillac, farmyard, underbrush nose, polished tannins. A bit too much oak still for a 13 year old wine, may be the lighter vintage should have less exposure to the new barrels, otherwise nice. At peak, drink up.

Dubai Emirates lounge. The usual impressive wine line up. Only tried a few of the Bdx. 07 Lalande, 06 Lagrange and 06 Cantenac Brown next to each other. All from open bottle in fridge and likely opened for some time already. Best to my surprise the 07 Pichon Lalande: slightly evolved color with a touch of browning, wonderful smooth on the palate, medium fruit but without any sweetness, tannins entirely integrated, very elegant, fairly short finish though. 92 and at peak over the next 5 years I would say. Cantenac Brown is showing better concentration, sweeter fruit but does not come accross as well balanced. Medium (-) length. 91+ good now but perhaps still with a slight upside with another 2-3 years in bottle. The Lagrange, which is a wine I usually really enjoy (think not only 90, 96 and 2000 but also for example 1994) cannot keep up entirely here. The fruit seems leaner than for the two others and the tannins are sticking out here a little. Comes across as a bit rustic right now. Perhaps this can soften and come together with another 5 years in bottle but would not bet my money on it. 89+

Leafy, herbal, cedar and tobacco leaf are more prevalent than the fruits here. Medium bodied, soft, fully mature, this requires consumption sooner than later. The wine was made from a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Picking took place from September 21, finishing October 9.

Cedar wood, tobacco, lead pencil, red and black currant create the perfume. Medium/full bodied, the wine is drinking great today. There is freshness, sweet, light, red fruits and softness in the finish. OK, the finish is a bit short, but the fruit is clean, lively and pure. There is no need to age this any longer.

(Decanter FWE 2016) :: Alongside the '05, '08 & '09. The nose is floral and elegant, with notes of eucalyptus. Quite expressive. The palate, however, is a touch thin and uninspiring, which is hardly surprising for the vintage.

Dinner with the IT guys (Tung Lok Signature (Central)): Blinded. Scents of cassis, tobacco and sandalwood on the nose. However, this somehow lacked the typical tell-tale notes of cigar-box, pencil-shavings of a Pauillac. Not tannic nor astringent, this was already fairly drinkable; Quite simple and straightforward on the palate, with a dark-fruited profile. Perhaps time may add more complexity to it...

From 0.375. Medium ruby with garnet rim. Expressive nose of cedar wood, oak, cigar box and cloves. Very classic Pauillac (in the Lafite/Margaux cedar wood, as opposed to the Latour/Pichon Baron earthy/forest style). On the mid palate this wine shows the weakness of the 07 vintage, where the body and fruit core are modest for the medium+ acidity. Also the oak is too visible. Ready now.

Made from a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the nose offers herbs, mint, green leaf, black plums, coffee, olives and green pepper. Decanter Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Masterclass (Landmark Hotel London): Medium ruby colour with narrow rim. Nose is intense but focused. Cedar bitterness. Probably needs time to open up. Notes of new smoky oak - not completely integrated. Palate is soft and flavours are expanding in the mouth. High level of good quality tannins. Has sweet feel and a lovely balance between fruit and structure. Palate is beautiful now - if only nose was more expressive...

Impromptu Saturday Japanese (Valley Point): Not a great Lalande. It certainly was a well-made wine which drank decently well, but I found it one of the weaker vintages in recent memory. Surprisingly merlot driven on the nose, it showed plenty of sweet plummy aromas and cherry notes, almost a bit candied at points, before more classic Lalande scents of earth, tobacco, spice with a bit of cassis peeked around the edges of the bouquet. The palate was a bit thicker and plusher than normal, plums again, and then some dark cassis sprinkled with notes of spice and earth - rather right-bank once more. There was just a twist of more left-bankish roasted capsicum and tobacco leaf somewhere in there, otherwise I might have thought it was a modern St Emilion. Not bad, but not great either. Time should add a bit of complexity, but this was a bit simple at the moment.

Pauillac 2GCC. One of the giants in the lineup, did not disappoint. Nose is rather reticent. However, once in the mouth burst into complex flavours of plums and cherries. Long persistent finish. Le Gavroche Welcomes Gildas d’Ollone (Vancouver, BC): Very young, not showing much in it's current state. Tight and tart on the nose, with aromas of sour cherry and rubber. On the palette this wine shows cherries, black currents, spice, and oak. The aftertaste was the best part of this wine, showing sweet vanilla, cassis, and lots of fruit, which leads me to believe this will come together very nicely with some bottle age.

Where is those charm gone? Really watery and lacking expression of it's kind! By far the worst experience I had with this famous chateau!!! Ruby in color, the nose is quite closed with very little suggestion of fruits, I feel quite embarrass by saying this. When can I stop thinking about those glorious 80's, 90's and early 2000's of this beloved chateau!!!! Sigh!

taste: Very pretty medium/full feel with a real roundness on the palate and silky tannins with tones of red fruits, tobacco, dark red cherries, berries and some cedar
overall: a beautiful wine. Needs some time, but this can turn into a real lovely lalande. There is a sexy style to it right now and with some more rounding out could turn into a real stunner

Goedhius Bordeaux Cru Classe Tasting (Saatchi Gallery): Quite disappointing for a Pichon Lalande. Slight nose and very tannic mouth with some rough edges. A shame, maybe it will get better in time.

Only complaint is unresolved tannins, still youthful (8.4/10). http://sgbordeaux.blogspot.com/2011/03/crystal-wine-bordeaux-2007-tasting-part_10.html

Purchased this wine on board Oceania cruise based on the recommendation of the Cellar Master. Extremely disappointing wine. This should not be consummed anytime soon, perhaps in 7 years if that. Stay away from this puppy.

18-bottle Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Vertical (1976-2007) (Jeff & Chuck's, Mountain View, California): Very nice earthy nose, somewhat thin in the mouth. Not ready for business yet, but seems to have the potential for a 91-93+ in 10 years.

This Chateau has always been up and down for me. Wine wasn't showing anything provocative as some past vintages, but it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Sigh!

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2007 Tasting (The Annex - Hollywood & Highland): A very pretty nose here with floral tones and notes of crushed berries, herbs, and licorice. The palate is subtle and approachable with smooth tannins and good acidity. The flavors are wonderfully floral driven with a kind of berry medley thing going on. I really like the purity and elegance of this wine.

Grands Crus de Bordeaux - 2007 Vintage Tasting (Los Angeles, California): Notes of broccoli and other green veggies. Good nose. At the moment the wine is really not enjoyable. It does have better concentration and more fruit than the Lynch Bages. Tannins are too noticeable.

UGC 2007 Bordeaux (The Drake, Chicago IL): nose: plush and sexy nose with lovely tones of red fruits, tobacco, dark red cherries, cedar and spice box tones. Very good depth with real beautiful and pure tones
taste: Very pretty medium/full feel with a real roundness on the palate and silky tannins with tones of red fruits, tobacco, dark red cherries, berries and some cedar
overall: a beautiful wine. Needs some time, but this can turn into a real lovely lalande. There is a sexy style to it right now and with some more rounding out could turn into a real stunner

UGC 2007 Bordeaux (Drake Hotel): Medium red color (lighter than most). Full bright spicy red fruit with no hint of the telltale PLL green note. Good firm spicy red friut on the palate with a firm frame.
