Saturday, March 9, 2013 - I was disappointed by the last bottle of Calon. This one is much more fulfilling. Surprisingly youthful color of brick red that goes nearly to the rim. Shows the concentration in the center with a nearly opaque color and brilliant highlights. Slow and pronounced legs, a well-made wine. Beautiful, simply beautiful. Powerful and complex nose of leather, smokey meat, cedar and a bit of red fruit, mostly bouquet at this point and very pleasing at that. What I most like about aged Bordeaux (must be the cab that ages so nicely). Medium to light weight, plenty of currant fruit, soft tannins and a surprisingly high acidity. A bit of drying out on the finish that is medium to short in length but nicely balanced. I like the structure of Bordeaux and this aged wine still has lots of intriguing flavors and smells to it. Final note-has all of the meaty cab characteristic of St. Estephe, more about power and pronounced flavor than elegance and refinement. A lingering taste of gun metal on the finish. Adds more complexity
