Thursday, February 15, 2018 - Small PC vertical tasting at home. Poured 2000, 2001 and 2002 into a Zalto Bordeaux glass at home using Coravin and let sit for 30 min. All bottles stored in cold cellar. There is much less between these 3 wines than one might think given the overall different quality of these 3 vintages. All three still show a fairly dark garnet to the rim without much evolution. The 2000 is a bit tighter with fine tannins in the very beginning and needs some air to open up. It has also finer delineation than the 2001 and in particular the 2002, at the same time it lacks some concentration, especially given the overall quality of the vintage. The 2002 is the biggest and boldest of the three with broad strokes of dry dark fruit. More masculine and Pauillac like for my taste. The 2001 sits in between and is the most balanced of the three. The differences are however subtle as I was going back and forth between the wines to determine which I liked best but my conclusion varied sip by sip. All three are very good and fairly typical Pauillacs, without however reaching the top wines of the appellation. Can drink now but will last 10 years. 01 and 02 are the smart buys. 91-92
