88 Points

Monday, June 9, 2003 - Decanted and serially tasted over a 5-hour period. Bright disc. Opaque purple robe with purple rim. Clean nose, initially showing coffee, caramel and similar toasted oak-induced aromas. At 90 minutes, black currants emerge. At the 4-hour point, mint, spice, chocolate and licorice aromas enter the picture. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and large tannins which are somewhat coarse. Similar flavors as for the nose. The mid-palate hollows out somewhat, but this will likely fill in with further time in the bottle. Medium slightly hot/dry finish. Overall a nice showing for this chateau, which has clearly over-achieved in this great vintage. Time will be necessary, however, for the full enjoyment of this wine to be realized.
