Thursday, June 11, 2009 - Interesting wine. At first it smells like a powerful, young vintage port. Plum, spice, bright cherry fruit. Closed, tannic, and backward. After aeration the wine begins to take on a more Bordeaux like personality. Barnyard, bright fruit, perfume, chocolate, smoke, mineral, and raspberry. Smells like a top notch Chateauneuf de pape. The palate is balanced and complex. Black cherry on the nose now, almost Rhone like characteristics. Unrelenting tannin. Needs time in the bottle. I like this wine, but its a bit awkward at the moment. Its like it doesnt know what it wants to be, part vintage port, part Rhone, part Bordeaux. Not quite sure I am crazy about the blend, but it certainly is interesting. The wine is very different, and perhaps it just needs some time and a little getting used to. For $30 it is definitely a good buy. It will be interesting to see what it does in the next 10 years or so. Must be decanted. Solid wine.
