Saturday, May 2, 2015 - Drank at home with Lionel and Rachel. This was lovely. Again, it took a bit of time to get going, starting out a bit tight and shrill. It really blossomed with some half an hour in the glass though, showing a lovely nose of red cherries and berries, dried flowers and sweet spice, and then just a little whiff of cigarette smoke and toasty wood chips floating over an earthy base. Really pretty and perfumed. Like I said earlier, the palate was a little shrill at the start, showing tart sour cherry flavours. However, while there was always that streak of bright, almost tomato-ey acidity, it really plumped up nicely with juicy gobs of cherries and red berries lined with earth and red meat and gentle mineral notes. The flavours were starting to mellow and round up, but fine tannins and that lovely acidity always had the wine focused and nicely defined. Finish had a pleasant length to it, melting away in a juicy, almost lemony kiss and a little trail of dried earth and smoky spice. This really punches above its weight. Good now, it still has years of upside to it. I am looking for more to load up on.
