2006 Giuseppe Rinaldi Nebbiolo d'Alba

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

Tuesday, September 4, 2018 - I bought a case of this on release and drank the first half between 2009 and 2015. Then I forgot about the rest of the bottles for three years before deciding to open one with leftovers last night. This wine in its youth had such a lovely, intense and unusual nose - it smelled quite remarkably like eggnog! - but sadly the first aromas on this bottle were overwhelmed by madeirized notes. In the mouth on opening, it was okay, but tired, thin, and dissipated. We decided to cool it down a few degrees, as it had been at room temperature, and see if air helped. Perhaps 30 - 40 minutes later, there was definite nebbiolo magic transformation going on - it had taken on some weight, the advanced notes faded, and some bright red cherry, roses, gingerbread and loamy elements, touch of pine needles, emerging. It was much closer to medium bodied at that point, with a more vibrant hue, and what I call "dustiness" that mature nebbiolo and Burgundy can get, and that I like a lot. An elegant, if shortish finish completed the impression. It was much improved, obviously, and quite pleasant to drink, though it never got beyond solidly good, and after another 30 minutes started going downhill again. We finished the last 1/3 of the bottle quickly. I have another 5 bottles, so I'll be curious to see what they are like, but I think I probably left this 2-3 years too long. Oh well - sometimes you get it wrong.
