Friday, March 20, 2009 - Removed from cellar (not standing upright), decanted and allowed to rest in decanter for 1-2 hours. Deep red-garnet robe with garnet rim. Clean nose, showing moderately intense aromas of black and red currants, meat and herbs d' Provence. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and big, slightly coarse tannins. The flavors mirror the nose and lead to a long, albeit slightly astringent finish. This is a wine which simply needs more time. Drink now-12/25.

A sidelight...The wine was decanted under candlelight (actually a tiny but bright battery-powered bulb). When the sediment became evident in the neck of the bottle, I used an unbleached coffee filter to decant thereafter. The sediment was significant, probably more than what I would expect for a wine this age.
