89 Points

Sunday, January 20, 2008 - Paid 10 GBP for this and was a bit sceptical about an 18 year old Vouvray but this really is outstanding. Golden straw colour, almost like a Sauternes. Nose is buttery, smoke, melon and burnt sugar and also with slight odours of spices. Taste is well balanced - a nice little bit of acidity that just balances off well against the sweetness. I doubt if this wine has much more to give in terms of its development - the sweetness/acidity is just right about now. This wine gets ticks in all the right boxes - well balanced, not overpowering, aging well and still with a wonderfully complex taste. If you were tasting this blind you could easily mistake it for a sauternes, and a good one at that. For 10 pounds I dont think I have had a better bottle of wine.
