Saturday, March 4, 2017 - This was an interesting wine served totally blind. Obviously Merlot-dominant, obviously right bank Bordeaux; I guessed 10 years old (not too bad, only a year off) -- but my first guess was Pavie. Damn. Second was Troplong.

It actually started out quite nicely; dark fruit, but not over-ripe, oak but not out of proportion. Gravel, parchment notes underpinning the fruit. Not particularly hot on the palate, I liked the combination of the vintage and the chateau. But we re-visited the wine about an hour later (a couple hours in the decanter in total) and it has totally disintegrated into a vacuous, oaky mess. Is it all patina or will it blossom further with time? Awfully tough to tell, but I bet it's going to go down one route or the other with more time. Caveat emptor...
