Bouquet of stewed and ripe fresh berries, a bit of prune, mint, undergrowth. Lush, silky palate, ripe fruits, jam, bitter chocolate, mint and spices, relatively heavy but in a good way. Some bitter elements on the finish, more spices, sweetness. Great for what it is. Feels still relatively young with further upside. Better than 3-5 years ago.

Served blind. I previously had the 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010 and although this was a good wine it was my least favorite of the wines I've had. I suppose that was to be expected since those other vintages are considered stronger. This wine had a dusty character with cocoa, burnt oak, leather and black currant notes. It tasted more mature than the other wines in the lineup. Dry finish. 90 points.

4th Saturday Brown Bagger (EBCC): Double blind. Aromas of sawdust, chocolate and black fruit. Flavors of blackberry and dark fruit, mocha and wood. Took some time to open up and even then remained somewhat restrained. Drank more like a Napa cab than Bordeaux. (R&D)

If I was judging this for freshness, it would get an 82, and if for power, a 98...This is some powerful, rich, deep juice that well...feels just like old juice. A huge finish that shows the deep extraction, with fig jam, and stewed prunes. For all those who bash 2003 Bordeaux, please try this. Feels hot as well...Just a mess. Pass
* A perfectly stored bottle by the way...could be an off bottle but it had no signs of damage.

JD Friday Wine Group - ED host (City Club, FW): Served blind - wow, this one smelled and tasted young. Lots of barrel prevalent on the nose, with high tannins. But deep, dark fruit on the palate. This one needs quite a bit more time, but is a really good wine, that will be really good for a long time to come. I called a young Napa cab.

Bouquet of ripe berries, prune compote, mint, liquor. Smooth palate with black and red berries, some acidity, quite some wood on the finish, dominating any fruit at this stage. Getting in a good drinking window. Slightly too extracted yet still a good wine in my opinion.

Pretty red fruit leaps out of the glass. There is some vanilla and wet soil qualities as well. Really lovely nose. On the palate this is power packed and concentrated with extraordinary length. Tightly wound but delicious now. Give it some air before diving in. Decades left of enjoyment here

Opaque, dark ruby with orange hue, good amount of sediment, decanted for 1 hour. Nose of cherries, blackberries, strawberries, tobacco, cedar, dill and mocha. Palate is dry with still good amount of tannins present, black and red fruit with some secondary characteristics. Finish is medium to long. Still have many years left in it. 92 pts

To us, this wine didn't impress our socks off. As wanting as its predecessor: 2007. Impressive is always our expectations for the wallet-throbbers out there. Love this chateau, but this vintage is simply too expensive compared to all the things it doesn't deliver.
Happy to have had only one btl. No need to return to this vintage.
If I'd had one more btl, I'd keep it for another 10ish years.

Beautiful wine, structured and chewy. Plums, tobacco, vailla, mocha and cedar. Loved the wonderful acidity and grainy tannines. Drink now (with a short decant) and in the next 10 years.

In a great spot with dark fruit and some plum, a big nose and tannins on the way to being resolved. Feels like it’s in the perfect window and should hold here for a reasonable time.

Ripe, plummy fruits with lots of oak still showing through. Full bodied with medium to medium- acid. Lots of persistent, grippy tannins. Modern-styled, but still distinctively St. Emilion. Should improve over the midterm as the tannins settle and the fruit takes a backseat, but not the style I prefer.

Blackberry, camphor, and earth on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, blackberry, and notes of cocoa, coffee, and earthy spices on the medium to long finish, with strong tannins and strong acidity. Although this opened up over several hours, it is still going to take some years to integrate its oak, which seems somewhat overdone. The Cellartracker drinking window is too short. This was an average to good value at about $90.

Very appetizing bouquet of ripe dark fruits, peppers, mint, liquor, undergrowth. Full, fleshy bouquet, leading to notes of dark chocolate, followed by quite some tannins, woody elements, with spices on the finish. A tiny bit too oaky and extracted but overall a very good wine with glimpses of greatness when tannins come across more resolved with air. More open than last time a year ago.

Expressive nose displaying concentrated ripe black fruit, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, dark milk chocolate, tar, a hint of rose, liquid smoke and earth. There is a strong oak note. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated sweet black fruit, rich and unctuous, bright acidity, medium earthy mineral, strong oak tannins and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with oak and liquid smoke at the end. It has mellowed since when I had it last in 2015. Nevertheless, the oak note is still quite strong both in the nose and the palate. The oak will definitely integrate a la Dominique Laurent burgundy. Although obviously no American oak, the oak may express as caramel in another decade or two, as in Bourbon and Riojas. If you don’t like luxurious oak/modern Bordeaux, avoid!

Opens with a beautiful multilayered nose of earth, mushrooms, perfumed flowers and pedals. Love the nose. Brick red in colour. On the palette, it’s still tight with tannins but very enjoyable. Medium red fruits of raspberries and cherries. Mid palette is a bit hollow but has a nice finish. Still needs much more time (5+ years). Medium finish. After 1-2 hours in the decanter, edges and tannins smoothed out with a soft supple finish. Remember visiting Troplong Mondot which was the reason for buying these bottles. Regardless very enjoyable from this favourite chateau. 94 today with lots of potential and confidence for growth to 95-96 in years to come. Enjoy!
Updated: On day 2 like most, the nose still had the nice red fruit and perfumed flowers, reminiscent of Saint Emilion. On the palette, the merlot had smoothed out nicely providing a much more plush, softer feel. Excellent and very solid. Can’t wait for the future for this claret – its got a good one.

Aromatically very beautiful with red fruit soi bois, oak, minerality and tobacco. Flavor is medium bodied (typical for 08) dark cherry and raspberry. Touch of tannin, which helped with my lamb chops. A bit short on the finish, which is again typical for 2008 Bordeaux. Yet, a very classic Bordeaux style. Reminds me of the 2001 vintage

Beautifully showing of this wine and I really liked it at this stage. Fruit is completely integrated and this wine is fully in earth/mushroom development.
Subtle bouquet of blueberries, pepper, chili, undergrowth. Lush, silky palate, first night with a three hour decant already in good shape, with dark berries, dark chocolate, a medium finish, second night almost a bit more closed with harsher tannins and wood element, third night softened again. Requires another 2-3 years to be more integrated but already quite a pleasurable wine, with a nice intensity and complexity, although a bit dark and roasted.

Had this wine over two days. It was decanted before tasting on first day.
I didn't do a formal tasting note because from moment one it felt kind of disjointed. Either I had an imperfect bottle, or (what I suspect to be the case) is that this wine is at an in-between period. It's not young enough to have youthful fruit flavor, nor is it aged enough to have mellowed and settled.
Assuming my bottle wasn't defective in some way (which I can't rule out - I got it from WineBid), I'd suggest waiting a few years before cracking the next one.

Initially shy on the nose, opens up with time. Still relatively young, needing a long decant, and much better the second night. Very velvety palate, balanced, yet with quite some oak and acidity that integrates with time in the glass but not fully, developing some initial sweetness, reminding me of high quality dark bittersweet chocolate. Potentially a touch too much oak and extraction, but the fruit does not seem overripe given the vintage. Needs time to come together and integrate, with the potential to get to 94-95.

Dinner with John and Kat (St Claudes): Decanted 30 minutes. Deeply coloured. Dark chocolate and dark fruits dominate the nose. The palate is full bodied, shows a touch of heat in amongst the integrated, toasty oak. It’s ideal with a flavoursome, hearty dish. Drink or hold.

Drank over two days. First day decanted for 3 hours. High in alcohol and quite some toasted oak, coffee, liquorice, and spice box. Tannins very supple. Unfortunately, the fruit didn't show. The oak and the alcohol are quite present in the finish. Next day, a bit better, but the fruit was still masked. Will try again in 2-3 years, probably some upside.

Spry bouquet, generous and lush on the palate, and then...a ridiculously bitter finish, reminiscent of heavy extraction and oak sap. Otherwise, perhaps a flaw with this bottle, as the one tasted in April 2014 showed no sign of bitterness.
Whatever the case, I will not score it.

92 points today, 95+ pts with at least 5 more years of age. Almost new world in style reminding me somewhat of Joseph Phelps Insignia. Incredible freshness and purity of fruit with secondary notes just starting to emerge. Grainy and almost gritty tannin which I believe will eventually soften with time. Some noticeable oak on the finish that too should integrate with time in bottle. Borderline exotic at this point. Consumed from a 375ml bottle. Hold for at least 5 more years.

Still young, oak not fully integrated, slightly extracted, but enjoyable, structured, chocolatey. Needs 2-3+ years to come together, soften and develop more secondary notes. There is upside to get to 94-95.

With some of its youthful oak still needing to better integrate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, lush, round and mouthfilling. On the palate, the round textured, hedonistic wine delivers layers of licorice, smoke, dark chocolate, plum and earthy essences, along with cherry liqueur. You can pull a cork now, or wait another 4-6 years for more development.

Weekly tasting group RWP #290: Bordeaux Vertical and Horizontal (@ VD): Beautiful, deep and complex bouquet with red and dark berries, coffee, chocolate, toast and also some green impressions. On the palate a lot of toast, juicy dark berries, vanilla, chocolate, good acidity and round, youthful tannin. Bitterness in the finish. The wine is in its adolescent stage and will improve with another 4 - 6+ years of ageing. I have a few, so there will be a follow up on this note. 93 - 94

Decanted this for an hour and it needed it. This opens up with an aromatic nose of blackberry liqueur, dark chocolate and wet stone that leads way to a jam packed mouthful of sweet, ripe blackberry licorice showcasing a range of expression that lingers ever so effortlessly.

From a magnum, at first this feels strident and a bit austere, but really it just needed a bit of time to unfurl. This is pretty massive, with treacle, licorice, spicebox and wet earth. There is something captivating though. One could argue it's over-the-top and over-extracted, but another perspective is that it is simply massively expressive, and I subscribe to the latter perspective.
On the 2nd day this was so much better - heavy, pronounced, weighty but more open too. Great stuff really. 94+pts.

This was an interesting wine served totally blind. Obviously Merlot-dominant, obviously right bank Bordeaux; I guessed 10 years old (not too bad, only a year off) -- but my first guess was Pavie. Damn. Second was Troplong.
It actually started out quite nicely; dark fruit, but not over-ripe, oak but not out of proportion. Gravel, parchment notes underpinning the fruit. Not particularly hot on the palate, I liked the combination of the vintage and the chateau. But we re-visited the wine about an hour later (a couple hours in the decanter in total) and it has totally disintegrated into a vacuous, oaky mess. Is it all patina or will it blossom further with time? Awfully tough to tell, but I bet it's going to go down one route or the other with more time. Caveat emptor...

This started out really nice and balanced with great chocolate cherry and earthy clay notes, but grew a bit confected with decanting. Palate is loaded with red berries, cherry, vanilla and some earthy clay. Finish starts fat but quickly devolved to woodsmoke, charcoal and tanin.
Hard to say where this goes. Drink with an hour in the decanter now, future... not sure how long to hold.

Enjoyed a 375ml bottle with a 2 hour decant. While still very primary, the right components are there for this to evolve into a special wine. Right now, it has almost a new world quality with espresso and chocolate notes with deep black fruit concentration. The tannin is actually soft and fleshy. I guarantee with another 10 years in the bottle, this will evolve into a complete gem. Glad I have more...
Had over two nights but much better on the first. Opened three hours prior. Dark rich fruit, spice cake, slight bitterness and chewy tannin. Hint of eucalyptus and toffee/coffee. Paired it with steak

A robust wine drank over two days. extremely floral on the nose with morning glory and currants. Very different on the palate, strong minerality, with baking spices and dark coffee grounds. Very enjoyable.
IMO, Troplong Mondot is one of the most modern Bordeauxs going back to the last 80s. More often than not, my tasting notes include “port like” and this is no exception. Quite expressive nose displaying extremely ripe black fruits, blackberry liqueur, cassis, tar, baking spices, dark caramel, truffle, lavender, mineral and earth. Excellent concentration, very silky palate, blackberry liqueur driven palate impression, bright acidity, noticeable sweet tannins and sweet mineral finish with a hint of alcohol at the end. The house style is strongly imprinted in the wine yet it shows bright acidity and tannins which can be attributed to the vintage. I can see this becoming like the 89 in ten years. If you are familiar with Bordeaux, you know where you stand, i.e. you either love or hate TM. If you prefer a ripe/opulent fruit driven Bordeaux, this is a good QPR in the current market.

Consumed over three days. The wine evolved noticeably each day and drank beautifully by the third day. Deep purple in color.
Day 1: The nose showed exactly what one might expect from such a young wine, black farm soil, charred earth, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, sanguinity and partially integrated oak. The wine drank very similar to how it smelled. Grainy, not chunky or chewy tannins dominated the tasting experience. The wine was the most brawny on this day. Had it at 93.
Day 2: The nose had become more of an aromatic bouquet that featured wafting notes of violets and ripe dark berries along with high quality dark chocolate and light to medium roast coffees. The palate featured all the elements from the first day, but in a more refined, integrated, and layered manner. The grainy tannins began to reveal hints of sweetness. Had it at 93-94 on this day.
Day 3: Wow! The wine revealed where it is headed in several years...and that is something beautiful. Lovely floral, blackberry, and mineral bouquet. Ripe dark berry fruit, delightfully layered minerality, texturally intriguing tannins, lavendar infused dark chocolate, and the finest coffees. In a word, seductive.
Very approachable with a long decant at present. The wine should evolve and integrate over the next five to seven years and drink beautufully through 2027 to 2030. So much elegance and refinement. Would love to taste a great vintage of this elixir! 95-96.

Quite bold, burly and extracted, some slight graphite and even menthol tones. This is my first Troplong Mondot. I tend to value finesse and subtlety more than power, and this clearly errs more on the powerful side. Yet, it is quite exciting and its big personality wins me over. I really think this needs another five years to show what it has though. Right now it's still too tannic.

This deep colored wine offers spicy chocolate, licorice, coffee, plum liqueur, smoke, minerality and jammy black cherry aromas. On the palate, this full bodied, concentrated, rich, tannic wine fills your mouth with fresh, tannic, deep, black cherry. The wine requires time to soften and develop nuances. Give it at least 5-8 years.

Has some perfume on the nose, together with cherry, licorice, talcum powder touches. On the palate, a bit plummy but definitely in the modern style. Not as dense as Pavie MacQuin but has more dimension; choosing between the two is purely a stylistic choice, and I like this a lot. 92-93

Oak, black cherry, anise, flowers, spice and minerality greet your nose, This round, rich wine with soft textures ends with kirsch and fresh blackberry flavors. 2008 was the latest harvest in the history of the property. Due to their cool terroir, the extra time allowed the fruit to develop full ripeness.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2008 Tasting (The Barker Hangar – Santa Monica, CA): Rich but actually quite elegant for this estate with lovely floral aromas of plums, berries, and herbs. The palate is firmly structured with surprisingly restrained fruit in a backward style. The flavors tend towards red and purple in tone and are somewhat dominated by the extracted tannins. I have to say I was expecting more complexity and fruit density from this wine.

08 Château Troplong Mondot. That the château did not conclude its harvest until November 1 is something for the record books. 2008 was also the debut vintage for their new cellars. For the first time the grapes went through 3 sortings, the final one done entirely by hand. The wine is dark ruby with inky tints. The nose shows ripe black fruit, licorice, flowers, spice, and toasty oak aromas. This full bodied, fleshy wine has a great mouth feel. Its long finish offers up black fruit coated with chocolate and licorice. 93-96 Pts

Bouquet of ripe berries, prune compote, mint, liquor. Smooth palate with black and red berries, some acidity, quite some wood on the finish, dominating any fruit at this stage. Getting in a good drinking window. Slightly too extracted yet still a good wine in my opinion.

There is something captivating though. One could argue it's over-the-top and over-extracted, but another perspective is that it is simply massively expressive, and I subscribe to the latter perspective.

I really think this needs another five years to show what it has though. Right now it's still too tannic.

2008 Vintage Tasting Union Des Grand Crus de Bordeaux, Great Wines of Bordeaux, USA Tour New York City (Metropolitan Pavilion): Solid, the best wine for me at the 2008 UGC tasting in NYC as it was perfectly in balance and had all of the right components: beautiful aromas in the nose, wonderful flavors (though packed tightly b/c of youth), and stoic tannins that will allow this to age well for years, plus the right amount of acidity to keep things fresh.
90% Merlot
5% Cab Sauv
5% Can Franc
Color: medium to dark red, crimson edges
Nose & palate: Coffee bean, licorice, blackberry and black cherry. The nose was a little tight, but still pretty generous. The tannins were so perfect for what you want at this stage, ripe and big but not too strong. Great texture and purity of flavor....very well done, I bought some the day after the tasting.

UGC Bordeaux Tasting (Boston): Dark and inky. Big, perfumey, showy nose. Rich and dense. Full bodied wine. Oaky, chocolate, mocha notes. Awesome finish. Not sure, this is really toeing the wine of overdoing it for me, but it seems to work, in the sense that it's pretty delicious and you want to go back for another sip. 92-94

UGC 2008 Bordeaux (The Drake, Chicago IL): nose: layered and dense nose of dark red cherries, spice tones, berries, black currants, cedar and a touch of anise
taste: medium/full bodied with medium acidity and silky tones of dark red cherries, spice tones, black currants, cedar and a good amount of berry tones. Plush tannins that are more on the sneaky side
overall: this has the makings of something very special. Well balanced and layered well on the palate, this is something very pretty right now and can get better

Bordeaux 2008 UGC tasting San Francisco; 1/21/2011-1/22/2011 (Palace Hotel, San Francisco): Big, deep, fairly rich, some oak, moderate finish. A big wine for the vintage, oak is there but not out of balance. Good wine for someone who appreciates a bigger, more modern style.

Powerful nose of black fruit and hint of vanilla... in the mouth, loads of black fruit, loads of ripe tannins... massive but very good!

Light fruity aroma, light fruity taste, still too tight. An elegant wine for a classic vintage. At this stage the wine is yong and not as impressing as my earlier expectations.

Tasted at Château Troplong Mondot in Saint Emilion. After the tour we had a sample in the tasting room. This is going to be real nice. Full and rich. Lots of fruit and other flavours going on. Real tasty and overall a pleasure. Can see why this estate is heading up!!! Great facility and they have been putting a lot of effort into their TM. Didn't decant and I'd say its 93-95 (with more time/aging). Really good quality wine.

Dark crimson. Dense, full nose with blackcurrant liqueur and kirsch. Elegant, full and well structured with cassis, black coffee and spicy wood. All held together with firm, youthful tannins.

2008 Troplong Mondot is the first vintage to officially celebrate their new, and well deserved upgrade in the St. Emilion classification to Premier Grand Cru on the label. This deeply colored wine has a complex perfume of black licorice, bitter dark chocolate, boysenberry, blueberry and juicy fresh plums. The wine fills your palate with luscious, opulent, dark fruit and hints of anise. 95 Pts

93-96 Pts

Bordeaux 2008 (Bordeaux): More balanced, with a cooler aspect compared to Pavie Macquin. I get a better sense of the combination of fruit, tannin and alcohol, although there is also some heat on the finish û with Merlots reaching almost 15 degrees. 90-93+
