2003 Dom Pérignon Champagne

Community Tasting Note

Saturday, July 27, 2013 - Based on the polarity of notes on this wine as seen on WineBerserkers, I backed away from purchasing more. Found the perfect occasion last night to open it, and was very, very pleasantly surprised. While not typical of Dom Perignon, this is a positive for me, as many vintages don't truly fit my style preferences until they have a good amount of age on them. While many say this is a simple wine, I disagree, as I found it to be quite complex. Firstly, there are more tiny bubbles in this Champagne than any I can recall tasting, ever. When you first taste the wine, it seems like it might be a bit lush or heavy - or perhaps that's just prejudging it based on the vintage - but the millions of bubbles give it a very light mouthfeel, which is probably good, in this case. Still, however, the finish is where a ripe Champagne would give itself away, and the finish on this is super dry - very mineral-driven, and I commented to Jen that it almost finished like a sparkling water, it was so clean and dry, and mineral-packed.

Nothing really made sense, I guess, in how this wine showed, but it was extremely enjoyable, and kept me guessing. Yes, it has a significant dose of flint (or some say sulfur) but not too much for our tastes, and it was so well made considering the struggles that they must have had with the fruit that it still easily passes for a luxury cuvee in my mind, and while I can see why many don't like it, I also see why there is polarity - you either like it or you do not, there's little to no middle ground. I wish I had kept my original order and had another bottle or two waiting.
