90 Points

Friday, November 9, 2012 - This bottle exemplified the reasons why wine can be so fascinating and yet so frustrating. The nose was initially delightful, wafting honey and spiced fruits around an encitingly golden glass. However, having decanted this relatively young premier cru I returned about an hour later to find an olfactory desert. Similarly, whilst the palate was a textural treat, there was nowhere near enough zing to leave the wine feeling anything other than slightly flat and characterless. However, over the course of the next two hours the flavours, balance and nose improved steadily until the last glass (I suppose predictably) was utterly delicious; caressing the mouth before delivering a fairly complex array of flavours ably supported by some envigorating acidity. So the whole experience encapsulated the disappointment at finding a wine performing substantially below the level its status would suggest and the thrill, satisfaction and, well, relief of drinking a thoroughbred white burgundy...and everything in between. This is why I drink wine.
