Monday, December 27, 2004 - lynch bages has always been one of my favorites. i have enjoyed previous vintages including 1967, 1970, 1978 and 1981. having carried around my wine inventory in my head for the past 30 years, i completely suppressed my purchase of the 1983 vintage. these bottles only came to light after conducting a physical inventory for entry into cellar tracker. this bottle survived somewhat over humid conditions in the cellar as evidenced by the label which was pristine. bottle fill was low neck. the cork was firm and intact although soaked with liquid through and through. the cork was protruding 1/8 " with some back pressure upon extraction. color was ruby red with minimal signs of browning. very fine sediment evident in the last glass. upon opening there was some bottle funk which needed 10 minutes to clear. aroma was more floral than fruity with hints of violets and lilacs. the aroma dissipated in the glass but refreshed with each new pour. the wine seemed thin at first, but delivered some structure which tended to overwhelm the aroma after 20 minutes. this wine, at this point in its development does not offer the same pleasures as previous vintages and certainly is less substantial than as described in its youth by parker. yet, i would not go so far as to say tired. nevertheless, i would definitely recommend that based upon this tasting experience as well as the recent tasting notes of other members, i would definitely say that this wine needs to be consumed asap.
