The high-toned nose gave me a bit of warning that this wasn't going to be too much to my liking. My biggest problem with the '96 vintage in the Northern Rhone is the overly high levels of acidity, though that's precisely why my Burgundy-loving friends like the vintage so much. There's some pretty cherry, bacon and black peppery spiciness on the nose and palate, but wine is highly acidic to the point of shrillness and the fruit is just too ungenerous to balance it out. B/B-.
