January Rhônes (Chicago, IL): A bottle in good condition, but not really offering too much of interest anymore. It feels a little old and tired; a bit of a generic old red wine thing going on here. High acid and some briny notes as well, but definitely feeling a bit long in the tooth. Drink up.

Acker Auction - November (JK's birthday) (Zuma in NYC): Was mostly excited to try this wine as it was just a few weeks ago that we were in a hotel room that overlooked the vines (we also took a hike up there and the grade these were on made it incomprehensible how they possibly do harvest. Oddly, this reminded me a bit of laundry detergent. Not in a totally offputting way, but in that kindof fresh grass way. Clearly aged. An odd wine. More interesting for the earlier connection than perhaps the wine itself.

The theme was Chenin Blanc and Northern Rhone. (Applewood): This is the estate bottling, not the Offerus. The high-toned nose gave me a bit of warning that this wasn't going to be too much to my liking. My biggest problem with the '96 vintage in the Northern Rhone is the overly high levels of acidity, though that's precisely why my Burgundy-loving friends like the vintage so much. There's some pretty cherry, bacon and black peppery spiciness on the nose and palate, but wine is highly acidic to the point of shrillness and the fruit is just too ungenerous to balance it out. B/B-.
