Thursday, August 21, 2008 - Impromptu Burgundy night (Duxton Hill, Singapore): William's bottle. Pretty good, but a little disappointing when stacked up against some of the fabulous Potel bottlings I have tried recently. This was a dark ruby coloured wine, with a really nice nose showing leather, dust and sweet dark cherry with a hint of cola, a few flower petals and, strangely, some Gauda cheese. Very extracted feel from the dark colour and dense nose. This certainly showed on the palate as well, which had a firm undergirding of tannins supporting dark cherries, a hint of cola, and slightly savoury, black olive flavours. Fine balance with good power and length. Just lacked a bit of something special for all that extract. Very much enjoyed nonetheless.
