Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - Salty Pidgin with Simon and friends (Brooklyn, Wellington, NZ): Served non-blind. Dark colour, compared with the Giacosa. A nose of fresh black currants and dark cherries, black spices, balsamico and espresso, with a hint of mint or menthol. No major oak artefact, just a whiff of toasty spiciness. In the mouth, drinking even younger than the Giacosa. Quite primary really, although the abundant ripe, rich fruit seems to have largely consumed the oak tannin. Sleek and silky, with ultra-fine grained tannins. Good acidity retained. Black and even a suggestion of blue fruit, mocha and iron, with some soy, umami flavours. A very modernist Cannubi. Very good, however the Giacosa was too tough a comparison.
