2006 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco

Monday, October 27, 2014 - Hazy soft red with some bricking. Surprisingly mature...I guess the modern style wines age much faster. The nose is beautiful and reminiscent of a traditional Barolo with 30 or 40 years of age, good fruit on the palate...dried cherries and strawberries, no noticeable oak, tannins very light and integrated. I have no idea if this wine will plateau here but it is very advanced compared to what I'm used to from the region. A very pretty wine right now.

They don't macerate the grapes on the skins for very long, maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of the time that the tradionalists often do, so you don't have the heavy tannin extraction that makes a lot of Barolo unpalatable for me at least until it is twenty or thirty years old.
