Tuesday, December 20, 2016 - Gevrey Chambertin Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): An absolutely delight - this was a really solid CSJ that was just about coming into its own. It had a really sweetly expressieve nose, with ripe fruit tones spanning the range from red fruited raspberries and strawberry candy to honey cake and dried mangoes - all a bit exotic for a Clos St Jacques - but also weighted down with more savoury umami tones, with a bit of earthy, meaty funk nestling in the midst of the sweeter notes. A really big, strong bouquet. Lovely stuff on the palate too, this was such a joy to dring - full and round, with liberal big red fruited tones showing a lovely generosity of expression, along with a wonderful freshness and energy to it all. Lovely depth, wonderful integration, great balance and poise, with powdery tannins underneath providing a great sense of structure - this really did not drink like a 1er Cru at all. In fact, along with some of its stabelmates in the quartet of CSJs, this really put most of the Grand Crus that we had on the night in the shade. Really good indeed, and yet given the structure and balance and fruit on it, this probably still has its best years ahead of it yet - I would love to try it again come 2018-2020. 93+
