Wednesday, March 9, 2011 - Coudoulet is often mistaken for Beaucastel's second wine, but it's not. The fruit for this wine comes from vineyards that are part of the estate, but fall outside the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. That's why it's a Cotes du Rhone! Basically that means it's great value, because it's about 1/3 the price of its big brother! This vintage, made with Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, is bright ruby red in colour. I found red berry fruit and a touch of liquorice on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with violets, spice and a long smooth finish.
