90 Points

Friday, April 30, 2010 - 15.6% alcohol. decanted, and you must. really. candidly, i am drifting further offshore from wines like this. about six weeks ago, i tasted/shared this within the context of a wine group that is VERY empathetic to the ethos. and i've been a part of that, too. however, see my note, i wanted to like it more than i did. tonight, it's just jane and me slugging this down over time. initially, there is heat, heat, heat, on the finish. bleh. that reduced over time. good. but the alcoholic nose, and the wave of ETOH on the palate lingers. bad. very bad. there is a plethora of fruit, dark raspberry and blackberry, bouncing around, planting a flag on the finish. good. tannins are chewey, which is fine with such a young wine. i noticed a small window where i thought, ok, this is getting better, but it was short lived. also, i hate it when you have to watch the serving temperature so carefully. if it starts to creep over 62, the heat comes back. fast. i guess if you like big, fat, super ripe syrah, this is a wine for you. i wish it were dialed back a couple of notches. i'm comfortable with the score. good, but too many reservations.
