88 Points

Thursday, April 30, 2015 - Unimpressive, to say the least. Given the recently consumed very -nice -to -wonderful bottles of the 2001 or 2004 Bin 904 and 890, and given some of the reviews for this wine, I anticipated more La Rioja Alta complexity and corps.

The wine was pleasant, smooth, but a tiny bit watery and lacking in the necessary smokey clay and cherry characteristics. With a short decant, the nose unfolded decently. These might take more time given the vintage, but not likely.

5/1/2015 7:39:00 AM - It might be an off bottle ( not bad just not impressive), and their 904s certainly are inconsistent. So I found this underwhelming and inferior to most of the Riojas I have had recently, even Crianzas.

5/30/2015 11:39:00 AM - As a fan of both LRA, and particularly Ardanza, I have to say that it does seem possible that bottle variation has some part to play. Either that, or its equally possible that these bottles pass through dumb phases.

The only encouragement I can offer is that when Ardanza is good, and it can and is, it sometimes makes me wonder why I paid the extra for the 904. As I say, I've scored this both 86 and 93. And stand by both scores.
