95 Points

Tuesday, March 14, 2023 - 1993 survey, or filling a hole with Chave (Chicago, IL): #28-94, 8% abv. Raise a glass to the good Doctor Bonnelli, from whose cellar so many of my own rieslings come. This bottle, unlike the last, was mercifully not corked, and we were in business. A serious bottle of riesling that wowed the table. Intense gasoline nose (or is it the sponti?) coupled with honeyed apricots. The palate is a continuation of that, with distinct and powerful botrytis notes. Almost oily in texture, but the acidity somehow cuts through that, and while this isn't as fleshed out on the palate as the top Prüm wines can be, there was something about hitting this right at the perfect spot that really made this a winner for me. Producer over vintage.
