Wednesday, October 29, 2008 - Sampling 2004 Barolo, Part 1: Purple and opaque, with lifted aromatics of sweet mocha, blueberry muffin, purple paint, black pepper. Very ripe, with moderately concentrated purple-ripe, raisiny fruit, sweet fakey mocha oak and gritty, astringent tannins. Tremendous concentration and firm acidity, but sadly cast in an anonymous, spoofulescent style that could be from almost anywhere. Funny though, I found the remnants in the fridge a week later and with a bit of a chill on it's not bad, even drinkable thanks to that firm core of acidity. As it warms to room temperature though that gritty mocha sweetness takes over again, alas.
