Friday, April 3, 2020 - A top shoulder British Transport Hotel Services bottling bought some months ago in auction as a curiosity and for the label. A relic of the days when merchants bought barrels and bottled for themselves. The cork came out in one piece with the butlers friend and smelt good. Dark red brown. Careful decanting left a lot of sludge. Although the vintage was very good, Broadbent called the wine rustic and given the age I wasn't expecting much from this wine. The second I caught the nose my hopes were up. Big sweet nose of leather at first then coffee and chocolate, followed up by liquorice. Surprisingly good body and balance and a huge, lovely finish. Well worth the gamble. P.s. half kept perfectly until the next day using the ZOS. Really smooth and not a hint of the rusticity mentioned by Broadbent.
