Saturday, June 30, 2012 - This is a seriously dark wine. It gives me a whole new reference-frame of darkness and inky blackness in a wine. The cork is the darkest I've ever seen on any wine-bottle, but since this is my first Gran Reserva, that could be the way it always is with these wines. The nose gives me a pleasant and balanced feeling at first, but after a couple of hours it turns into a lot of blackcurrant and cabernet-ish fragrances. Still pleasant and balanced, but a bit more boring. They say Tempranillo is a lot like Cabernet, and it sure feels like it on the nose of this 85% Tempranillo wine. The mouthfeel of this wine is one of balance, concentration, slightly overpowering oaky tannins, a long finish, some alcoholic heat and a fat body in the middle. Much like a snooker-player. A pleasant one...

The problem with this wine is that it gives me little to be exited about. I miss complexity and different changing aspects of taste. This feels like being hit by a freight train. The wine keeps going and going, but only in one direcion. For all its concentration and drive, it gives me nothing new. It drags me along into blackcurrant-land, and I'm not sure that's where I want to be...
