Sunday, September 30, 2012 - Enjoyed over a three day period. Notes from day 3.

A beautiful dark garnet color. Surprisingly an intense, somewhat Port-like nose of raisins, alongside the usual suspects dark cherry, dust and leather. A nice mix of really rich, deep fruit and saline. Unusual, but very intriguing. On the palate the wine is not actually a huge beast, although by no means a lightweight either. Perfectly ripe and very succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice and earth form the very dry and very harmonious flavor profile. Silky tannins and gentle yet high acidity cleanse and dry the palate leaving a very fresh mouthfeel. The nose might suggest the wine to be overly smooth, sweet or heavy, but it is none of those things. Instead it is bright, balanced and lifted, and just terrific with food. Fairly obviously a wine built for the long haul, since 48 hours after popping it still sports a top notch structure and very vivid fruit. Yes, it's a very dark and bold wine, but for a fan of traditional Sangiovese like myself there is a lot to like - even love - here. Just open it early and let it evolve, or hide it in the cellar for a good few years.
