Drank this bottle at home (as opposed to at a restaurant last bottle). Decanted for about 15 minutes and enjoyed over dinner + 3 hours throughout the night. Deep ruby color. Wonderful nose of dark berry jam preserves and dried fig balanced against some dusty mineral/iodine/funk; very inviting. Palate is full bodied, coats the tongue nicely. The higher alcohol and acidity are balanced well with notes of tart black cherry, blackberry, roasted tomato on the front palate that give way to earthy balsamic, iodine (lead?), and dried floral hints across the mid palate. Finish of slightly drying, soft leathery tannins on the middle of the tongue; well integrated; finish lasts 5-6 seconds. Overall a great wine, enough complexity and depth to give it good QPR. Paired well with a beef ragu.

This producer to me has always been just ok and not worth the tariff compared to many other producers of Chianti Classico. This is a solid effort, but you can get Monsanto, Felsina, Rocca di Montegrossi, Fontodi, Castell'in Villa, Isole e Olena and others that are better for less $. Beautiful color on this wine. Nose is muted with a resiny note. Tastes of cherry, but lacks the complexity and the bite on the finish that one expects in CC.

It is a stark difference from my experience back in 2012 upon reading my 2012 notes.
2012: "Popped and poured. 80% Sangiovese, 20% a selection of malvasia nera, merlot and cabernet franc
This bottle was showing a very much shut down version of what I tasted in Italy. The quality of the wine was all there, it was very suppressed and muted throughout the duration of the dinner. Would need a lot of time for my remaining bottle."
2017 Day 1: Super expressive on the nose and palate. Very savoury & umami with unmistakable ripe fruits on the nose. Dried herbs abound as it continued to opened up. On the palate, it was also definitely ripe but had a aged savoury umami note to it. Fine tannin structure that holds everything into place and integrates very nicely as it breathed. An absolutely delicious and elegant Chianti Classico. I'm glad I held on to it a little longer. I'll update on Day 2

Decanted; considerable sediment. Notes taken on day two... Clear, deep-ruby color to the rim. Dark berries, vanilla and oak on the nose. Medium-bodied dark fruit on the palate with ample acids and soft tannins. Medium-length finish. Probably will not improve further, and I plan to drink my remaining bottles over the next two years.

Some browning on the edge and some oxidation in the flavors. While this would normally be a very good Chianti with some complexity, the oxidation detracts from the wine but is not quite enough, at least for me, to make it undrinkable. Served with home made pizza. NR

Truffle Cheese Night (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Slow-ox in bottle. Drank over 3 hours. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose medium intensity, slight barnyard, earth, tea leaves, red cherries, black cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), fine high tannins, full body. Initially quite tight, but opened up with more air. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, black cherries, earth, tar, spice. Long finish. Very good quality Chianti Classico. Drink now with decant, or give this another 2+ years to drink excellently right smack in the drinking window. Well done, and this is not even a Riserva or Gran Selezione. Thumbs up.

Dark but without viscosity on swirling. Beautiful nose of perfume and berry, with just a hint of must/age. Classic, medium body and balanced acidity of a good chianti. An excellent food wine -- great with tortellini doused in olive oil and pecorino tonight. Flavors don't quite live up to the nose, but still, this is really quite good stuff. Has 2-4 years of further improvement ahead as acids mellow further.

Both CellarTracker and Wine Spectator rate the 2007 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico as 90 points. I do not drink many Chiantis, but the Castello di Ama holds its own. This wine has a medium body, medium acidity, medium plus tannins, and medium sugars. I would be willing to give this another showing in my home. I rate the 2007 Castello di Ama Chianti 88 points.

PNP first bottle....wine needs air and gradually opens. Solid classic chianti with acid and citrusy red fruits and some deeper, darker cherry that emerges with air and time. Plenty of time here and few if any visible signs of aging

This deep garnet wine was tasted in double-blind fashion, with the bottle kindly provided to our tasting group by J.P. It flaunts nice aromatics, with red plum, earth, terragon and tobacco. The wine follows with a full-bodied palate which delivers similar flavors as for the nose in a frame of tart acidity and medium-weight but rugged tannins. The alcohol (listed as 13.5%) is well-integrated and the middle is solid. Concluding tart and with medium length, this is a very structured Chianti which may benefit from additional cellar time. That said, it is a bit too acerbic for my taste. Drink 2016-2024.

Medium body wine that was initially closed off and not in balance. After an hour in the bottle the different elements began to integrate into an enjoyable drinking experience. The fruit is almost muffled but dark hints with some leafy green and earth. I think it would have gone better with food than as a stand alone, which this was for me.
I plan to hold my last bottle for 3+ years and see how it develops.

Still fairly fruit forward for a chianti, this verges on "gulpable". With 45 minutes of air, however, the acidity and tannins are more present, lending some additional balance. I like this wine now, but also suspect it will hold well over a surprisingly wide window.

Opened up with some funky tones. Something in between sweaty socks, wet mud and root crops. With some air came a more classic chianti nose with sour cherries, herbs and tobacco. An ok wine but just one of many ok chianti classicos.

Deep red color with small hints of brick red at the rim, even some sediment so this wine could need a decanting.
At first a bit unpleasant nose of mud or horse shit or whatever. This nose, thankfully, disappeared after 30 minutes in the glass. There after we have that classic chianti classico nose with sour cherries, coffee, chocolate, dried herbs and licorice. There is also some hints of barnyard and rotten leaves which indicates some maturity.
The flavors on the palate is almost the same as on the nose, but the cherries are the dominating flavor. I think the wine goes better along with food then on it's own.
In my opinion this wine is a good wine but it's lacking personality and/or charm. I think that you can get more value out of the 15€ I paid for this .375 bottle. Maybe some aging will bring out the best of this one.

Enjoyed over a three day period. Notes from day 3.
A beautiful dark garnet color. Surprisingly an intense, somewhat Port-like nose of raisins, alongside the usual suspects dark cherry, dust and leather. A nice mix of really rich, deep fruit and saline. Unusual, but very intriguing. On the palate the wine is not actually a huge beast, although by no means a lightweight either. Perfectly ripe and very succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice and earth form the very dry and very harmonious flavor profile. Silky tannins and gentle yet high acidity cleanse and dry the palate leaving a very fresh mouthfeel. The nose might suggest the wine to be overly smooth, sweet or heavy, but it is none of those things. Instead it is bright, balanced and lifted, and just terrific with food. Fairly obviously a wine built for the long haul, since 48 hours after popping it still sports a top notch structure and very vivid fruit. Yes, it's a very dark and bold wine, but for a fan of traditional Sangiovese like myself there is a lot to like - even love - here. Just open it early and let it evolve, or hide it in the cellar for a good few years.

In the begining there was four single vineyards. IN '96 this apperently was two of the single vineyards being put together in order to make great Chianti Classico.
They are the highest altitude producer so the wines are never "big". On the other hand, the Rosato is apperently used to bleed off a little juice and make this thing more concentrated. Onthe other hand, Nicola Massa notes that they still want to make a great Rosato.
But now this wine.
80% Sangiovese, this again is two single vineyards, when they don't produce the other two everything goes into this.
Darn this is dark and rasiny. Not sure what the message is here. Its definately not like other Chianti's that I have had. But maybe that is the gosh darn point. Structured, with depth, a monster.
And yes, at Castello di Ama pricing. But on the other hand it is rather amazing stuff.
This is the face of AMA, and this is the face of Chianti Classico. 93 points rated.

nice dark purple color - clear. Aroma shows light cherry, with blackberry highlights. Wine is light, but full of cherry in the mouth. Medium dry with a pleasant finish that lingers (wish it lingered a bit longer). This is an easy wine to enjoy on its own.

Aroma is subtle, but inviting with dark cherry and chocolate notes. It is pleasant, albeit dry in the mouth with the fruit not quite delivering the promise of the aroma, but it is well rounded and enjoyable. I let this wine sit after aeration for a while - it softened a little over time.

Nose: Very rich nose. The merlot comes out with some spice on the nose. A delightful hit of olive tapenade at the backend. Very cool climate kind of bouquet.
Taste: Still very young and primary, needs lots of time in the cellar or in the air. A very refined power compared to other Chianti Classicos I've had over the past week. A darker refined style. Good structure and loaded with sweet tannins. A gentleman's Chianti Classico

Ran through a Vinturi into a decanter, then a vigorous shake for 20-30 seconds. Seemed to open the wine up nicely, at least on the palate. Nose is relatively subdued, but after significant coaxing, a perfumed presence of red fruit, mint/spearmint, spice and wood. On the palate, relatively full-bodied as compared to most other Chianti I've had. Dark fruit against balancing acidity in good proportion. Supporting oak is nicely balanced. A hint of resin and mocha. Some fine tannins on the finish. Potential to be several points higher in 3-5 years.

Drank over two days and considerable improvement and maturing was noted. Very dark red, almost purple in colour. Nose subdued on the first day but much more open on the second day. Dark red fruit leaning to blackberry. On second day more complexity showed with forest floor notes and damp wood. Decent finish. Needs a year or two, but very enjoyable now.

The Italian Wine Masters (Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York): On the nose, I found vibrant black cherry with spice and woodsy notes. The palate was full and bursting with flavors of mint and rich raspberry. The finish was medium-long with sweet red fruits lingering on the palate.

Good food and so-so wines at Wein & Co in Salzburg; 1/27/2011-1/28/2011: Restrained, bland and thin, oddly neutral but for a hint of slightly watery cherry on the entry, this was a disappointment, given the famous name on the label and a high rating from Robert Parker. Yes, it was the best wine this evening, but hardly a stellar Chianti. 86(-87)P

Drank from 375 ml bottle. This bottle appeared little less mature than the last bottle over two years ago. Drinkable when opened but improved over two days. Dark black cherry and raspberry, as before with forest floor. The palate is intense and balanced. Drinking really well on the second day.
