Sunday, December 4, 2005 - Day 1: Distinctly unimpressed for my first first growth. Decanted 10 hours ago but also sipped on over the course of the day from the bottle. This wine really didn't evolve a whole lot in this time. The nose somewhat, the palate very little. Very dark in color, dark purple with lovely coloring. A big nose of smoke, leather, currant and cocoa that was attractive and open-knit from the start and improved a little over the day. But the problem is the palate. Medium-bodied, with sweet flavors of currant, coffee, and roasted black fruits and a short, clipped, tannic finish. I can only hope the other bottle I have that I intend to lay down for the next twenty years, offers considerably more pleasure. NR.

Day 2: The wine has now been in a decanter for over 30 hours (in the fridge for the past 24) and it is far, far better than yesterday. The nose is softer and approachable, with rich cassis, and although the wine is still very tannic, there is class, balance, pedigree and breeding in every sip. It is a civilized wine drinking far more easily than it should at such a young age. The flavors are nothing revelatory - pencil lead, currants, and hints of dark chocolate, overlaid with some smokiness, tannin and austerity - but the way the wine is packaged bodes well for a long future. Do not touch this wine for another 12-15 years at least. 94 points.

What a great learning experience.
