Sunday, February 26, 2012 - I hate to say it, but this ain't your granpa's CdP. Not that this is a bad thing, but if you're hoping for shades of 1995, 2001 or even 2005, this isn't it. First the color - am I looking at a grenache based wine or is this a gamay by way of the rhone river valley? A very light ruby red with no discernible signs of a thicker mid-body, and an unexpected reflectiveness to direct light. The nose screams high alcohol and big sugars, with a glycerine sheen that bespeaks a very young wine that will need some time to tone itself down (oh, that baby fat is gonna take sometime to lose itself). The flavor is pure blackberry sugar compote, with a hint of bacon fat and some garringue, but mostly it's melted brown sugar meets butter. It does surprise in it's ability to go well with food, but make sure you're talking either spicy or rich, otherwise the wine will overpower the table mate. It has a solid midpalate and a decent finish, but I don't think it will last more than six to eight years. The sugars are just too much and the acid isn't enough to compensate. But for now, enjoy the party while it lasts....
