Blackish red, brown edge. Large bq w sweet blackberry fruit, minerals, undergrowth, some pepper. Full bodied w plenty of sweet fruit (almost overly sweet), but good acidity and tannins helps balance it. Medium aftertaste w fruit and alcohol. This is a modern CdP. Good QPR, though.

Second Sunday Group: 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (R&D's): Double blind. A bit reticent at first, faint cherry notes. Opens slightly, candied cherry and spice aromas had me thinking this might be pinot noir. Cherry and spice flavors continue on the palate, all with good underlying acidity.

A bit primary & alcoholic, this will likely improve with some aeration or further aging. Quite fruity (blackberry, black cherry, raspberry) right now, with some minerality & tar notes on the late palate & lingering finish. Pleasantly medium-bodied with a little tannic grip on the late palate & finish.
I don't know that this will ever be amazing, but likely to improve with 2-3 more years of age.

Rich deep, dark fruit is well integrated; nice finish. Had next to a Martinelli single vineyard Syrah to provide contrast to New World and Old World style. More mineralogy and darker, more restrained fruit in the Mont-Olivet.

Rubis grenat avec disque qui commence a briquer. Au nez, fraises, framboises, poivres, bonbon posson rouge. En bouche, belle équilibre, tanins souples, beaux fruits sans surextraction, longueur moyenne. Beau Chateauneuf. Devrait s'améliorer encore avec quelques années.

A more modern-style CdP, showing a good deal of fruit on the nose but less on the palate. Seemed a touch flabby and I wished for a bit more complexity, but this was solid and enjoyable. Probably due to the modern-styled fruit, my wife scored this 91-92.

Needed time to calm down after opening. Very tannic and bret. After a while it calmed down a bit, but still not totally resolved. Medium body and flavors, and enjoyable. But I expected more from this bottle.

The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry. It tastes like blackberry, black currant (cassis) and light toast. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

It seems like my "palate-preferences" have changed since I had the other bottle (about a year ago) but I find it too rustic and not that charmy as I expect from a chateauneuf... They say 80 % grenache but I find it strange.

I opened this one with a bit of trepidation. The night before we had a 2009 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau and I was very underwhelmed and in November ('13) a 2009 Xavier Châteauneuf-du-Pape which was undrinkable. My concern was the '09's were just in a bad place. My fears were unfounded.
The bottle opens to a classic CdP nose dominated by Grenache. First taste, a bit tannic but a short decant clears that right up. Not as much of the Mont-Olivet forest nose that you find in many of their wines, just enough to appreciate and enjoy; great color, nose and palate of black fruit, herbs and spice with a subtle, delicious peppery finish, not significantly long but long enough. For those who have had a bottle earlier and found it less than stellar, definitely approach it again now. Backbone and acidity to age but I think the 2020 current outside drinking window is a bit too far. Drink now and over the next four years.

Disappointing. High pitched, thin cherry notes dominate the experience, without much depth or structure. A little bit like a hard candy. Maybe shut down a little bit and that's keeping the other flavors from coming out, but the high pitch fruit argues otherwise. Also missing the signature peppery finish of a CdP.
Deep purple color. Nose of boysenberry, purple fruits and a hint of heat. Heavy mouthfeel. Black olive, boysenberry, blackberry and assorted red and purple fruits, some pepper and spice. Tannins are unobtrusive and a nice acidic lift at the end. Enjoyable, drinking well now and should go on for a decade+.

It's been a long time since I've opened a CdP this young, and the young, fresh fruit and garrigue notes were very welcome and pleasing. The palate shows fresh cherry and berry fruit, is bright but not lush, is well contained, and shows a pleasing note of lavender and a very interesting and distinct note of fresh sage. With air, forest notes emerge, and the fruit shows a nice sweet-sour balance. But then I note a bitter edge to the tannin. While there is no degradation or oxidation over night, there is not much improvement either, and the tannin still shows a hard edge to it. My guess is that this will improve with short-term cellaring, say, two or three years. However, I don't expect it to become a great wine. It's good now, not great. Say, B, maybe a stretch to a B+. Gift from Chris Y.

Quite fruit forward upon first opening, develops earthiness and spice over time. I felt it was somewhat candied and jammy at some points, which isn't my favorite style. But I wasn't quite paying enough attention to this, but pretty nice and the wife likes it a lot.

I hate to say it, but this ain't your granpa's CdP. Not that this is a bad thing, but if you're hoping for shades of 1995, 2001 or even 2005, this isn't it. First the color - am I looking at a grenache based wine or is this a gamay by way of the rhone river valley? A very light ruby red with no discernible signs of a thicker mid-body, and an unexpected reflectiveness to direct light. The nose screams high alcohol and big sugars, with a glycerine sheen that bespeaks a very young wine that will need some time to tone itself down (oh, that baby fat is gonna take sometime to lose itself). The flavor is pure blackberry sugar compote, with a hint of bacon fat and some garringue, but mostly it's melted brown sugar meets butter. It does surprise in it's ability to go well with food, but make sure you're talking either spicy or rich, otherwise the wine will overpower the table mate. It has a solid midpalate and a decent finish, but I don't think it will last more than six to eight years. The sugars are just too much and the acid isn't enough to compensate. But for now, enjoy the party while it lasts....
