  • In a really cool place, after a little funk and slight walnut/oxy note blew off it actually had a lot of cherry, red berry fruit, aromatic like a perfumy Burg, but darker ruby-brown and cloudy; juicy and tangy finish, no one could come close to guessing this blind. Blind tasting at Monopole

  • Quite clear ruby colour, just like old Rioja, but not perfectly clear as there was some dusty sediment. The wine is very reserved and keeps it to itself. Restrained meaty nose, also mild marinated vegetables and some camphor oil, wilted flowers. Very integrated, pleasant mouthfeel but rustic, edgy finish. Some dried strawberries or other berries on the nose and palate, a sweet and sour nuance. Good but not great. (B)

  • The theme was 1982 and older from anywhere. (Il Corso.): Another wine that shows wide variability. I remember Manuel one time going through several corked bottles of this before finally finding one that was tca free. Other times the VA has been out of control. When it's on, though, it can be a terrific bottle of wine. This showing was fine, but a bit sedate. It showed some decent cherry and strawberry fruit that continued to grow with air, with old wood, spice and citrus, but the wine seemed constrained in a straitjacket and perhaps a bit medicated. There just wasn't a lot of energy to the wine. Some interesting coffee and herb notes developed with air, but an unusual plastic note also came up. B.

  • This is just a plain old lovely wine. Very Burgundian in nature. Much more fruit than I was anticipating and plenty of clean earthy secondary notes. Soars over its price point.

  • As good as ever with this bottle. Dried roses, tar, orange peel. The aromas are truly soaring in a too-good-to-drink sort of way. The flavors are dominated by bloody iron then some sour cherry, it's dusty and perfectly acidic and is a bunch of all around goodness.

  • Yum. Everything you would want in an aged rioja. Effusive spicy, dried citrus, floral nose, elegant mouthfeel, just enough acidity, and integrated tannins. Tastes not quite as good as it smells but the aroma is out of this world. Showing no sign of declining.

  • That '70's show...all '70's all the time: Loire, Spain, Ca, Bordeaux, Port. (Applewood): Shows a little volatile acidity, light red fruit and worn wood on the nose, though overall the aromatics are fairly muted. Hmmm not showing well at all. I've had two to three nice bottles and now about three off bottles. This bottle shows an integrated wine, but one that's light in the mid-palate, with no real fruit or much of anything to take notice of. C.

  • This wine has an ethereal nose that wafts from the glass and demands attention. It is almost tragic to drink this Riojanas, as it is far better to just sit back and enjoy the nose all night long. The nose has notes of dried rose petals, burnt cherries, baked clay and tanned leather. The palate is mid-weight, with many of the notes from the nose being repeated, along with a good acid structure and integrated tannins. Still, the palate has nothing on the aromatics.

  • Bought in Rioja for a birthday wine; brought back and shared with friends. A great wine with a very complex and evolving nose. Beautiful rust color. All aspects clearly showed it was well-aged beauty. I would have bought more if there had been.
