89 & 91 side-by-side (a 90 was sadly corked). I preferred the 89 by a bit as it was more aromatically intense/complex and had lots of layers and nuances on the palate, relative to the more fruited but less complex 1991. Both great wines and both seemingly with a long way to go.

Ruby color, with earthy notes in the bouquet. Ripe dark fruit, wonderful complexity, a velvety texture and sufficient remaining structure. A stellar mature burgundy.

A (Burgundy Grand Cru) Birthday Celebration (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Served blind in a (mostly) vertical, in which this was a ringer. Clearly a ripe vintage wine, this is complex, layered, and fully mature with engaging depth. Still a bit tannic (it's an old Faiveley!), but that is barely obtrusive. My favorite of the flight.

Jim's Retirement Party (Libertyville, IL): From magnum. Ripe and rich but fully mature. Lots here with layered meat and spice and mushroom unfolding over the few sips I tasted (twice). There seemed to be a bit more earth and dirt than ideal, and maybe a very faint whiff of VA, but that was not too pronounced.

Jim's Retirement Party (Libertyville, IL): From magnum. I had high expectations of this, but I think this bottle came across a little dirtier than I personally like. Relatively tannic with a coarse texture, this has a distinct dried red fruit character on the palate.

Opened for a Zoom tasting with Erwan Faiveley and friends. Opened and drank ~45 minutes later and then throughout the day. A magical nose of dusty cherry fruit that is intermixed with toasted spice, toasted herb, earth, mushroom and florals -- just a fabulous array of mature Burg notes. The palate still has rich fruit that is fresh and well integrated with the smooth remaining tannin. Should hold for years. One of the top vintages for Clos des Cortons according to Erwan.

Now I get why people rave about mature versions of this wine. Wonderful nose of forest floor, dried meat, barnyard, sweet spices. Great mature Burg. Good structure, tannins fully dissolved. Great showing!

Really fine showing, exotic nose with spice/incense and fresh black raspberry and cherry fruit, full and well-balanced. Long finish. Elegant for Corton. A-

Zachys La Paulee Auction, Day One (Le Bernardin Prive - New York NY): Served in 89/90/91 vertical, tasted multiple times over 3 hours. Each wine was the favorite of at least two people at our table! Wonderfully mature with lots of evolved black fruit with excellent concentration. This popped-and-poured and probably best after open 30 minutes, then less interesting 2 hours later.

From an excellent looking bottle, this wine had a deep red center and orange rims. The medium intensity nose showed blackberries, roasted meat, raspberries, and forest floor notes.
This wine was a bit awkward in the mouth for an hour or two. Afterward, it developed a relatively silky, fine-grained texture. This was somewhat offset by the savage fruit profile. The moderate tannins were rounded and the wine had good length.
Despite a somewhat rustic flavor profile, this was a nice bottle. I see no reason to defer gratification.

Mature Cote de Beaune: 1959 to 1990 (Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok, Hong Kong): Half-glass drank blind at a pre-dinner tasting with a few top-ups over dinner. Beautiful richly jewelled ruby colour. Marvellous stinky nose of Swiss cow houses and new leather.....brilliant. Palate is fresh, jeweled and perfectly balanced......powerful but elegant. Powerful length and considerable resonance on the finish. This has probably just started to drink in its peak window although I'd judge that it has decades ahead of it. Fantastic! My 1/12, Group's #5.

Gorgeous. Still a touch of tannic bitterness on the end at first, but that eases with time in the decanter. Bright, pure red and dark fruited flavours tinged with more mature savoury and earthy elements, powerful yet graceful and very persistent.

This bottle was the star of the evening. It had a gorgeous nose of rose petals, damp earth and a hint of roasted meat. In the mouth, it had decent acidity (especially considering the vintage) a smooth, lush mouthfeel with fully resolved tannins. To my tastes, this was pretty much a point.

Slow-oxed about 3-4 hours (a bit bottlefunky on opening) Big, muscular, but tannins mostly resolved. Dense black plum and cherry fruit, leather, smoke. I'd like a bit more acidity here, it comes across a little heavy, but nice wine. B+/B

From magnum, at Bar Boulud. A slight leathery scent but otherwise not especially aromatic. It's fully mature and now essentially fruitless, but far from vacant; the material is deep, dark, and briary with a surprising density to it considering how weightlessly it falls on the palate. And it has a sweetness, too -- a very polished mouthfeel with barely any tannin left. I can't say the package is especially full of character but it's a satisfying mature wine.

Rick's Wedding Reception: Showed just a little odd at first. With air, it opened up and was unexpectedly in a dark fruit spectrum with smoke and plenty of acid to back up the fruit. Length is there, but I am not finding the focus, delineation and verve I find in the best burgs. Good, but not great for me tonight.
