Aging wine with aromas of stewed prunes, vanilla, and some lingering dark fruit. + oak. Moderate weight on palate and pleasant but not brimming with complexity.

Sampled 3/6/11. Inky purple color. The reason I stopped drinking even the very best Hess wines years ago is because this winery has a far greater love affair with Oak than with grapes. Unfortunately, that love has not faded one bit over the past decade. What is otherwise a 93 or even 94 point wine is destroyed by Oak chips that are all but floating in the glass. The wonderful blackberry, black cherry, cassis, dried herb and vanilla elements are all but dominated by a thick layer of Oak. Perhaps I'll give Hess another try in another decade.

Clean and balanced with a medium body. This wine was nice and open, with a clean smell of raspberry and spice. Mouthfeel was medium, and the fruit expression was cassis and raspberry. Finish was moderate, and there was a slight edge to the tannins. Nice wine.

Complex aroma's of cassis, chocolate, coffee, and vanilla with some brown spice also. Tasted of restrained fruit, vanilla oak, and soft, integrated tannin structure. very nice wine.

Young and voloptuous, this wine was excellent, if a bit less grand than its younger brother, the 01. It has cassis, mountain fruit, and austere tannins, with a moderately long finish. Will benefit from several years in the cellar.
