  • The vintage sent alarm bells ringing, but my wine merchant (who I trust dearly) assured me all would be well since the house picked in mid-August. Wow. There is age, fruit, and elegance all in balance here. The fruit is robust, but not jammy; black cherry, black raspberry, some plum, which is starting to shift toward prunes. This has an excellent balance of savoury characteristics, which don't always meld well with the fruit forward pinots; ceps, truffle, damp earth, forest floor, some barnyard. Age is evident in the beeswax and damp curtains note. Palate carries the fruit very well, acidity (which I feared would be a real problem) is very pleasant, tannins still there. Plenty of body, but also supple, with clean grippy tannins. The finish is very sublime. A must with mushrooms.
