  • Just like the previous bottles, this was vinegar.

  • 2004 Marcel Lapierre Morgon. Was worried since i took posession of a couple of these bottles - the colour in them is so pale it looked like a rose and I wasnt sure what to expect. Stood it up, carefully decanted off very fine sediment and WOW. The floral lift off the nose was stunning. It rolled into blood orange, a bit of cinnamon and licorice and again this floral lift on the end and hints of mint. In spite of being a shade past rose there was good body and acidity to it. Mrs. VeV remarked that all the hallmarks of young bojo - the strawberries, sappy fruits, bubblegum notes were nowhere to be found and she loved it too. Great foil for BGE roast chicken and a green salad.

  • This came out like rose colored water, highly acidic and with some VA. Seems to have turned into vinegar... Fill and capsule was fine, but the wine, unfortunately, was not.

  • What a great wine. Morphed and evolved, heavily. Started off life w/ a heavy CNP kinship with a heavy iron overlay and a dose of funk - seems like many Morgons do this at opening. From there, into a Pommard (Volnay side) lookalike. Then moved into something else (can't remember - though pine stands out), and closed out the bottle with a tapered diminution of the whole thing. Living, beautiful wine. Good acids. Did someone have a problem with 04? I like it, almost everywhere north of Lyon.

  • Half bottle. On the nose, spices and dusty red cherry fruit. On the palate, quite light - especially compared to the 2005, tasted several times recently. Dried red fruit and spices - clove. Much better showing, compared to a 750ml of the 2004 I had recently (see TN).

  • Pretty red fruit aromas straight out of the bottle, but with a hint of reduction, too. No matter, as that burned off over the course of the 4 hours this wine lasted on the table. With air, the wine took on more weight and dimension, adding a smoky and mushroomy character to back up the primary fruit flavors of raspberry, strawberry, and rainier cherry. The carbonic maceration is not particularly evident here. The wine finishes extremely clean and has a fairly long finish. I believe this wine represents a very good value in beaujolais and will reward 5-7 years of aging. Really lovely gamay.

  • Not as impressive as a bottle tasted at the beginning of May (see TN). Today the 2004 was a bit murky / muddy; very light, with sulphur and barnyard notes. The 2005 that followed blew the 2004 away... Note: this could have been an off bottle. I have another half bottle that I will open soon and post a follow up TN.

  • $23.99 full retail. Light red color. Faint red cherry / strawberry fruit on the nose, with a hint of spice - clove. On the palate, this is light bodied and well-balanced, with, again, light red cherry/strawberry and clove. Solid underlying acidity. I liked this but was surprised by just how light and delicate it was. I served it at 60 degrees, and I would not want to serve it any warmer. (RV 8334**)

  • Recent Wines; 3/10/2006-3/19/2006 (Around Tokyo): I’ve been looking forward to cracking this one, which recently showed up at a small shop near my house. Light and translucent red color. Shows as bright and clean, but not dense – hinting at quenching freshness. Initially closed on the nose, but a minute or two of vigorous aeration brings out hints of crunchy red fruit – as well as an extreme sweaty-bretty kind of funkiness with a hint of rubber as well. The off notes are strong enough that it is hard to taste anything through them. Nonetheless, I soldier on to find a wine lacking a bit in concentration, but having that (pleasantly) thin and easy flowing fruity acidity that can make these wines as refreshing as good tart fruit juice. On the finish, the off notes dominate again. Coming back to this the next day, the off notes are gone and have left behind a nicely typical Morgon that simply lacks scale and a bit of ripeness. There are slight stemmy/green notes that have also faded by the third day, to leave small-scaled but smooth and refreshing mineral, earth and nicely tart red fruit. Lessons here: First, this needs time and I might worry a little about whether every bottle will shed its off notes. Second, what this really lacks is concentration and flavor impact. It is a “mini-me” of the normal Lapierre Morgon. Fair enough, but now I’m looking forward to the 2005 hitting the shelves.

  • Closed initially but opened up really nicely - great floral notes. Elegant Lapierre. Classic.
