  • Dinner at Irene's: This had a traditional CDP profile with a lot of garrigue and some black fruit. Full-bodied but not jammy.

  • PnP, and drank over a couple of hours. Pleasant from the start but it opened up nicely over a couple of hours. Very light on the nose but lots of bramble, blueberry and a hint of strawberry on the palate.

  • Opened three bottles of C9P for a birthday meal with 14 diners. 2008 Saint-Cosme, 2007 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf, 2003 Le Vieux Donjon. All excellent. Some preferred the Usseglio, the sweetest and most fruit-forward of the trio; others, including me, preferred the LVD, finding it to be the most savory and deepest, in both color and texture. Others preferred the Saint-Cosme as just the right balance of fruit and savory, but lightest on its feet.

  • Negociant. 50/30/10/7/3 Grenache/Mourvedre/Syrah/Cinsault/Clairett 24 months French aged oak. Nice style, a little New World is there, but earthy too. Pretty grippy, nice layers.

  • A Very Casual BYOB Evening: Lighter in color than I expected, and very fresh on the palate, with fine typicity featuring dark fruits, mild herbs and a touch of mushroom. A very good showing for the vintage, based on its richness and decent structure. I made the mistake of suggesting we chill it a touch, though, and this shocked the wine to sleep -- my bad.

  • Lovely, fresh nose, earthy with fresh berries and hints of wild herbs, the mourvedre component definitely noticeable. Nicely balanced on the palate, the grenache & mouvedre working in harmony but not completely immeshed yet. Good sweetness and length, the red berry fruit and hints of garrigue lingers almost delicately into the finish. This is delightful with no overripe, overextracted qualities, but I do sense little heat from the 14.5% Abv. 50% Grenache – 30% Mourvèdre – 10% Syrah – 8% Cinsault – 2% Clairette

  • Dark ruby color - certainly tight upon opening... Opened wiilingly with 10 minutes in decanter. Very typical Chateauneuf-du-pape charisma: tar, earth, dark berry fruit. Tannic finish, which gave way in time to a fine structure. Frankly, very surprising for an '08, given the rough vintage year. It will probably be as good as it can be after 3-5 years of cellar time. Very pleasant, looking forward to opening another in ~4 years.
