2001 was the last vintage bottled under the Orlando label. Couple of hours in the decanter which was definitely required. Touch of mint and currants. Enjoyable but I think on the decline.

Opened up beautifully in the glass to display aromas of earth, mint, blackcurrant leaf and softened berry fruit. Plenty of complexity and it had a wonderful melted chocolate texture. Perfect to drink now.

Deep brick in colour, with a classic coonawarra cab nose of tomato leaf, blackcurrant, earth and a hint of mint. Medium to full bodied, with similar flavours, a hint of oak, a lovely silky texture and a strong, long finish. I really enjoyed this, it had great purity and depth of flavour. Still on the youthful side, it should last a while (A-).

Brick red bright with a little residual sediment towards the bottom of the bottle Nice nose little bit smoky, plums. Still very smooth good length and could still last a bit longer not completely gone yet.

Did the unthinkable last night and opened a 2001 St Hugo Cabernet. I have just started drinking my 1994’s (drinking very well I might add), but bought a six-pack of the 2001’s on release and I hadn’t tried them. Very deep, ruby red colour. The nose consisted of plum and blackcurrent aromas, but also had that distinctive cabernet green leafy element in the background which tended to disappear after some air. Good cabernet varietal flavours, with black fruits and a fine tannin structure. Big wine, good use of oak and very balanced but as expected needs time to settle down and soften. Like most St Hugo’s give it another 5-8 years.

This was a stunning wine at 20 years of age. Still ruby red in colour, good nose and lovely balance of flavour vs soft warm tannins.
