Decanted 3 houra, hints of tar, anise and wet metal grace the nose, while in the drinking window still shows remarkable structure and taut tannins, very dry with dried cherry, herbs and wood chips on the palate, a complex wine with food friendly character, a dry and woody wine overall, should continue to develop into a classic style

Double decanted in AM and drunk in evening. Still quite tannic. Roses, dried rose petal, lots of tar and tannin. A little rustic on the alcohol presence.

Opened 6 hours earlier, then decanted before serving. Still relatively deep ruby with little fading for 13 year old Nebbiolo. Balsamic notes lead, then citrus peel, a touch of herb, and tobacco as it opened. Light, lean, and tannic at first, but more air brought out lovely, gently sweet red fruit, citrus, soil, and excellent texture. An altogether elegant, discrete, classic wine whose trajectory today seems to beg for 5 to 8 more years in bottle. It sneaks up on you as it unfolds rather than knocking you out from the get go. If I had known what I know now, I would have opened it last night to give it a really substantial breathe.

This is still a little young. Decanting for a few hours opened this up noticeably, with rich black cherry, raspberry, and something rich and earthy (maybe balsam) on the medium to long finish, with fine-textured tannins and strong acidity. The Cellartracker drinking window looks a little early for once. I will wait three to five years before trying another bottle.

Nose: black cherry, Coca Cola, a slight herbaceous funk. Palate: strawberry, black cherry with balancing acidity. A little dill/vanilla. Great mouthfeel. Fine grippy tannin with a long balanced finish. 93-94 Going to buy some to cellar another 5-10 years.

Brooding nose, with sweet cherry, raspberry, and balsamic notes. Tight and dense, this has the vintage's Burgundian lightness but remains too closed to celebrate it. Drink starting 2022.

2008 Barolo Retrospective (Blind tasted) (The North End Grill): The nose showed ripe plum, crushed strawberry, dusty spices, sweet minerality and dried floral tones, On the palate, I found silky textures offset by zesty spice and balanced acidity, which added energy and verve, as pretty red berry and inner floral tones coated the senses. The finish was long with staining spicy red fruit, sous bois, and lingering sweet herbal tones.

This was drunk over about four hours, and it improved steadily over that period. Ether on the nose. On the palate, rose petal, cherry, strawberry, and notes of dark fruit and oak, with moderate tannins and strong acidity. Although this is still young and fairly closed down, it is already a pleasure to drink. This was a good value at about $75.

Dark red; stringent tight nose with licorice, some tobacco and black fruit; sweet structured attack, then tannins show, not too much, but present; quite good but requires some time to open and probably better some years from now (?)

Had this with the 2004 and this lost by a point based on to its showing. Followed over 6 hours. Was first tight and brooding with strong mint aroma. Later on showed potent burnt oak which was less attractive. Palate was richer than 04 with some herbal austerity and acidity not quite in balance. This could be a better wine in 4 years, based on richness of palate, but a bit less attractive now.

Some wines with Jeff Chilcott: A gift from the winery. Our contribution to the dinner. Excellent potential with this wine. A little reduced on both bouquet and palate. Fresh and very intense aromas of dark cherries and blackberries, liquorice and lifted dark florals. Also a suggestion of citrus juice I sometimes see on Baroli. On palate, as well as the reduction, the wine was a little primary and closed, although it did open somewhat with time in the glass. Vibrant and crystalline red fruit flavours. Elegant, refined and well balanced. I'd give this wine 10+ years cellar time and a lot of oxygen if I did open it earlier.

Chewy tannins, lighter than expected and probably could have used another 3-5 years in the bottle.

A very elegant wine that perfectly complemented the mushroom ragout pappardelle.
