Like many, I bought this at Premier Cru some 17+ years ago for $15, no doubt thinking what an amazing deal it was to get not just an Auslese from Ürz Würz in a good vintage for so cheap, but a ** Auslese at that! Well here I am all these years later realizing that I don't think a single one of my bottles has been sound. They've run the gamut from horrifically corked to mildly corked to flat and uninteresting. A shame.

This is one of those Premier Cru John Joseph Christoffel ausleses that sold dollar-wise in the teens. Still in great shape. The streak of acid is noticeable to offset the sweetness. Glenn, who supplied the wine, thought it was close to a BA. Strong tropical notes. Golden-amber color. Nice finish. This has years to go. A Premier Cru import.

BODY: neon light amber color; medium-full to full bodied.
TASTE: medium-low acidity; mostly tertiary; very pleasant; not super-sweet --- clearly this has aged; 8% alc. not noticeable; likely at, or a bit past, peak. Drink Now and over the next 10 years, depending on how "fully mature" you prefer your sweet Rieslings; for my preferences, it's a Drink Now. gut impression score: 90.

Shimmering gold. Concentrated flavors of pineapple, yellow apple, and a hit of peach. Quite sweet but not cloying sue to a nice acidic streak. Not showing tertiary flavors yet and feels like it has plenty of life left. Drink through 2030.
Day 3 drank the remainder that was left on the counter without a cork. The wine has smoothed out a lot, with loads of yellow fruit but the pineapple is less prominent. Prefer on day 3; if drinking anytime soon, a decant is recommended.

Chatham. A real treat even if not as spectacular as the 2001. Still quite sweet, as its ** would suggest, but balanced enjoyed with cheese and not bad with grilled pork tenderloin because of the accompanying mango salsa. Not fully tertiary yet. Drink or hold.

Tasted blind. Golden color, hint of petrol, looks rather aged. Lovely concentration here that screams auslese. Medium sweetness, seems a bit lacking on acidity.

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about three hours.
Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of flowers, orange peel and lychee. Flavors of dried pineapple, sweet cherry and a hint of apricot. Bright acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold.
This bottle was showing exceptionally well.

Pale yellow in color, nose is somewhat muted, lemon and Asian spices. Lemon creme, ginger, apricot, orange marmalade, sweetened botrytis notes but laser-like acidity balances the sweetness to keep it balanced and uncloying. Unlike many an aged Riesling, this has nary a hint of petrol to be found, which in all honesty, is a good thing. I find many aged Rieslings yield to an overwhelming preponderance of petrol that hides other flavors in the wine. The wine is in a good place and well integrated right now.

AP 2 602 041 006 03. Deep yellow color. Aromas of cheese and sour milk eventually blew off, leaving sulpher, mineral and peach notes. Flavors of stone fruit, peach and apple, with good underlying acidity.

Time has done a wonderful thing to this wine, harmoninzing the sweetness with the honey, nectarine, and orange marmalade flavors, acidity and carmelized flavors in the wine. While it is sweet, everything is so well integrated that it does not come off as such. Really good, although the nose does not stand out.

Welcome acidity after the Errazuriz. Some botrytis, warm apple fruit, that acidic backbone. Good length. Nice wine, if not exciting. This was one of the $15 PC blowouts, good value at that price, but I had also bought some at $35 at release, and value is borderline at that point. B+/B

Dinner at Bistro Sofia with Steve & Barb. AP #6-03. Another one from before we left for the restaurant. Pale yellow in color, I think we caught this at the wrong moment. Very tightly wound at first, it opened some with time. Lots of fall spices showing. Seems to have a nice depth to it and a strong future but this is a hold for 10+ years kind of wine at this point. 50+12+12+7.5+7.5 = 89+

What great value. The way this wine has been priced, I expected to find something wrong with it. NOT. Perfectly fine reisling capable of aging for several years.

Colour pale straw. In the nose a razorsharp acidity at first, the same fine acidity is found in the mouth. White pears, minerals, hay, lemon and roses. Everything well in place. Great potential but lacks complexity currently.

Bright golden hue, a bit restrained nose, lacking depth at first. Opening up but still a bit simple on the palate although improving with time in the glass. Will improve with age - try again 2006

Pretty good. Rich, evolving, but had an element of buttered popcorn that detracted from the experience for me.
