  • My bottle didn't quite make it. Wet leaves and mold overwhelming all else. Blew off slighty with decant, but never grew into anything to get excited about. Drinkable, but nothing like some of the glowing experiences described by others.

  • This was better and more refined than my first bottle, very smooth and elegant, a nice core of light cherry fruit, medium to light body. A real treat!

  • What a nice surprise. Bought two bottles of this and shared the first at a chevalier paulee. That bottle was a solid 89. An enjoyable bottle with a decent nose - but the body and finish were nothing spectacular. So the second bottle I brought out bc it was a summer night, we needed something light and our guest had graduated from high school in ‘78. Oh my was this wine spectacular from the outset. No need to decant. Tremendous smoke, mineral and earth on the nose mixed with light fruit. If It were a blind tasting, I would have said aged Chambertin. On the palate the fruit was stronger but the smoke and earth just danced together in something exotic - so enjoyable to decipher. The finish was shorter than expected due to appellation, age or both. But a beautiful bottle that really made the night.

  • An incredible aged Burgundy. Brown aged tint. Precision without being harsh or linear. Each taste brought new smells and tastes. Enough red fruit remains to provide a freshness, but the secondary and tertiary flavors come and go throughout the night. Fresh tilled soil, wet stone, old leather, grass. It is a complete package.

  • Fill was about 3 cm below normal and cork was saturated, which had me concerned. However, initial taste was bright and fine; elected not to decant. Translucent garnet, only bare hints of orange. Nose had red berries, earthy notes, with hints of 'old fruit' and mineral. Palate was medium light weight with a very clean, almost refreshing combination of acid brightness and silky fruit/tannins. Complex finishing flavors and texture. Paired with pan-seared cod just beautifully - acid cut the oily meat and the light fruit was harmonious rather than overpowering (CT notes helped inform this choice). Terrific sensory as well as conceptual experience.

  • I do not have much experience with aged Burgundy wine, but I was surprised at how fresh it tasted (perhaps I just expected something different). There was nice acidity and some raspberry and cherry fruit. It did seem like the fruit was a little overwhelmed with mushroom and wet leaves. Drink now.

  • Very much what I was expecting from a mature Santenay, just a bit rustic still on the nose but the palate, texture and structure have smoothed out. Acidic, not much fruit left but yet enough energy and development to make it a rewarding and interesting dining companion.

  • Elected not to decant - left open 60 minutes and poured 15 minutes before consuming (this was based on age and others saying that its dumbness fairly quickly turned around). Translucent garnet-orange. Nose with combined fresh red berries with a hint of stewed fruit notes and distinct, enticing earth and 'shrooms. Light weight fruit on entry but with depth of flavor. Both light acidity and tannins build quickly are enveloped by the fruit to create a dancing creamy texture. Very nice with spinach gnudi and sage butter. Great experience seeing how even a modest Burgundy can emerge when well-stored for 35 years.

  • A fascinating find on a NY wine menu. Nice lively nose of mixed red fruits, and good solid, only slightly tawny color. Light. At first, the deadly signs of browning, off-flavor stewed fruits and a recognition that this cru was unlikely to live so long. But then acid emerged and the fruit balanced, showing some nice strawberry,, pruney hints, a bit of raspberry and some overcooked plums. Lasted quite a while. Delightful historical venture.

  • Saturated cork had me concerned. The initial smell of cellar earth blew away quickly to reveal soft floral notes, but still a bit tight shy. In the glass it is a pale brownish red. In spite of the fact that I hate "forest floor" as a cop out note on older wines, here it is appropriate with wild oyster or Enoki mushrroms balancing the soft red currant fruit and subtle clove. There is a soft dead spot in the mid palate where I miss some acidity but the finish is classic aged Burgundy. We drank it with venison stew, always a great pairing with older Burgundy for me.

  • Very fresh nose, closed at first, which opens up when it warms up. Floral nose with currant, cherry and some spice. Flavors very primary fruit oriented. Tastes like a fresh open young wine. Amazing how young this tastes for a 78. No tertiary flavors at all. Feels like a young wine.

  • Amazing what a well made, well stored, 25 year old Santenay can become. Maybe this doesn't have quite the depth of '78s from more tony addresses, but this is a terrific wine. Gorgeous ruddy translucency and an instantaneous nose of soft red fruit and earth in the glass. The fruit and earth are enveloped in a taught acid structure and there's still a bit of tannins up front. The years have polished this into a text book old burgundy.
